REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1990-92 Cabriolet, Fox, Golf, and Jetta
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the horn pad.
  4.  


NOTE
On Cabriolet, disarm the air bag system and remove the air bag unit.

  1. Mark the position of the steering wheel to the shaft and remove the wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the combination switch retaining screws. Carefully remove the switch from the steering column.
  4.  
  5. Remove the screws retaining the cruise control switch to combination switch and remove the cruise control switch.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Assemble the cruise control switch to the combination switch.
  2.  
  3. Install the combination switch and connect the wiring.
  4.  
  5. Align the marks made for the steering wheel-to-column position and install the steering wheel. Tighten the nut to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the horn pad. On Cabriolet, install the air bag unit and make sure no one is in the vehicle when connecting the battery.
  8.  

1993-99 Cabrio, Golf and Jetta
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Position the steering wheel straight ahead.
  4.  
  5. If equipped with an airbag, see the proper removal procedure earlier in this section.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering wheel trim screws.
  8.  
  9. Detach the switch assembly from the steering column by removing the fasteners.
  10.  
  11. Pull the assembly off the steering column and detach the connectors from the backs of the switches.
  12.  
  13. Remove the switch assembly
  14.  
  15. Installation is the reverse of removal.
