REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Cabriolet

The blower motor and series resistor are reached from under the hood, just in front of the windshield.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the clips and gasket holding the water deflector in place and remove the deflector.
  4.  
  5. To remove the plastic cover that is now visible. Some vehicles have fasteners which are accessed from both under the hood and under the dash. If after removing all screws, bolts or clips visible from above, the cover still won't lift off, check under the dash for more screws.
  6.  
  7. On vehicles with air conditioning, disconnect the linkage for the air distribution flaps. Remove the remaining plastic cover.
  8.  
  9. The blower and series resistor are now accessible. Remove the screws and the motor.
  10.  
  11. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure the seal around the motor is properly reinstalled.

Fox
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front cover sealing gasket.
  4.  
  5. Remove the water deflector.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the fresh air housing cover retaining clips, then remove the front fresh air housing cover.
  8.  
  9. If equipped with air conditioning, undo the lock and disconnect the air distribution flap levers.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear fresh air housing cover.
  12.  
  13. If equipped with air conditioning, label and disconnect the vacuum servo motor hoses and hoses from the grommets in the lower portion of the fresh air housing covers.
  14.  
  15. Remove the thermal resistor and thermal circuit breaker from the support.
  16.  
  17. Loosen the blower motor mounting screw and disconnect the blower wiring connectors.
  18.  
  19. Remove the lower fresh air covers.
  20.  
  21. Maneuver the fan and motor towards the front of the car, then remove it from the fresh air (blower) housing.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Install the fan and motor assembly into the fresh air (blower) housing.
  2.  
  3. Install the lower fresh air covers.
  4.  
  5. Connect the blower wiring and install the blower motor mounting screw.
  6.  
  7. Attach the thermal circuit breaker and thermal resistor to the support.
  8.  
  9. Connect the hoses to the lower fresh air housing covers and connect the vacuum servo motor hoses.
  10.  
  11. Install the rear fresh air housing cover.
  12.  
  13. If equipped with air conditioning, connect the air distribution flap levers and engage the lock.
  14.  
  15. Install the front fresh air housing cover and lock the retaining clips.
  16.  
  17. Install the water deflector.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable and check the blower operation at all speeds.
  20.  

1990-93 Golf and Jetta

The blower motor is located behind the glove box and it may be easier to remove the glove box to gain access to the motor. The series resistor is mounted on the motor.

  1. Disconnect the wires at the blower motor.
  2.  
  3. At the blower motor flange near the cowl, disengage the retaining lug; pull down on the lug.
  4.  
  5. Turn the motor assembly clockwise to release it from it's mount, then remove it from the plenum.
  6.  
  7. The resistor can be checked by connecting an ohmmeter to terminal A and terminals 1 and 2. At terminal 1, resistance should be about 3.3 ohms. At terminal 2, resistance should be about 0.8 ohms.

  9. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  10.  

1994-99 Golf, Jetta and Cabrio
  1. Remove the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Detach the connector from the wiring leading to the blower motor.
  4.  
  5. Remove the five attaching screws from the blower motor.
  6.  
  7. To remove the blower motor, pull it downward.
  8.  
  9. Installation is the reverse of removal.
