REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Golf and Jetta
  1. Disarm the air bag system and remove the steering wheel as described in the beginning of this Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the horn pad from the steering wheel.
  4.  
  5. Make sure the front wheels are straight ahead and remove the nut and the steering wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering column covers and disconnect the wiring to the switches.
  8.  
  9. Remove the screws to remove the turn signal switch and the windshield wiper switch.
  10.  
  11. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the steering wheel nut to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  12.  

Fox
  1. Disarm the air bag system and remove the steering wheel as described in the beginning of this Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Pull off the steering wheel cover/horn pad.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering wheel lock nut and spacer.
  8.  
  9. Using a steering wheel puller, remove the steering wheel.
  10.  
  11. Remove the retaining screws, then remove the combination turn signal/headlight switch.
  12.  
  13. Remove the windshield wiper/washer switch from the steering column.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Install the windshield wiper/washer switch onto the steering column.
  2.  
  3. Install the combination turn signal/headlight switch.
  4.  
  5. Install the steering wheel, lock nut and spacer. Tighten the nut to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the steering wheel cover.
  8.  
  9. Connect the battery cable.
  10.  

Cabriolet
  1. Disarm the air bag system and remove the steering wheel as described in the beginning of this Section.
  2.  
  3. The air bag connects to the spiral spring behind the steering wheel. Note how the wheel fits into the spring assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the 3 Phillips head screws to remove the spiral spring.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering column covers and disconnect the wiring to the switches.
  8.  
  9. Remove the screws to remove the turn signal switch and the windshield wiper switch.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the wiper and turn signal switches and connect the wiring. Install the column covers.
  2.  
  3. Install the spiral spring. If the spring was turned while removed, it must be returned to its center position. Turn the spring all the way in one direction, then turn it back 4 full turns.
  4.  
  5. Install the spiral spring.
  6.  
  7. Install the steering wheel, making sure it fits into the spiral spring. Tighten the nut to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  8.  
  9. If the battery was connected while the air bag unit was removed, disconnect the battery and wait at least 20 minutes for the back-up power supply to discharge before installing the air bag unit.
  10.  
  11. With the battery disconnected, install the air bag unit with new Torx® screws and tighten them to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Make sure no one is in the vehicle when connecting the battery. Turn the ignition switch ON and make sure the warning light on the instrument panel stays ON for 5-8 seconds, then turns OFF .
