    Shift Linkage

    Print

    REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

If the shift linkage has never been disconnected, adjustment may not be necessary. Check the condition of the engine/transaxle mounts and make sure the linkage fasteners are secure. If the linkage feels spongy or if it is difficult to put the transaxle into first or reverse, check the condition of the main rod bushing. This is a plastic bearing protected by a rubber boot just behind the shift rod clamp. On Cabriolet, there is a rubber boot around the bushing. Peel back the boot and make sure the nuts and bolts are still secure. If the bushing is broken or worn, it should be replaced. Lightly lubricate the bearing with a light silicone grease and fit the boot into place. Try shifting gears again before deciding to adjust the linkage.

    Cabriolet
    1. Remove the shift lever knob and the shifter boot.
    2.
    3. There are 2 holes in the lever bearing plate that should be aligned with the holes in the mounting flange on the body. If necessary, loosen the bolts and move the bearing plate to align the holes.
    4.
    5. If shifting is still spongy, put the transaxle in neutral and loosen the clamp on the shifter rod. Make sure the rod moves easily in the clamp.
    6.
    7. Remove the boot protecting the bottom of the shift lever assembly.
    8.
    9. Move the shift lever so the shift finger is centered in the lock-out plate.
    10.
    11. Move the lever so the finger is 9 / 16 inch (15mm) from the plate, then tighten the clamp. If shifting is still difficult, reduce dimension A to 1 / 2 inch (13mm).

    1990-92 Golf and Jetta

A special alignment tool is made for adjusting the side-to-side position of the shift lever. On vehicles made after January 1991, the shift lever is equipped with an eccentric for fine adjustment.

    1. Make sure the vehicle is on level ground and place the transaxle into neutral.
    2.
    3. Under the vehicle, loosen the clamp on the shifter rod. Make sure the shifter lever moves freely on the shifter rod.
    4.
    5. Remove the shifter knob and the boot.
    6.
    7. Position the gauge alignment tool VW-3104 on the shifting mechanism (lock it in place). Tighten the clamp bolt to 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) and remove the tool.
    8.
    9. When the shifter is in first gear, dimension a should be 0.040-0.060 inches (1-1.5mm) and the gears must engage smoothly when the engine is running.
    10.
    11. If there is an eccentric adjustment, it can be used to make a fine adjustment of dimension A with the shifter in first gear.

1995-99 Cabrio, 1993-99 Golf and Jetta
    1. Remove the knob from the know and the boot from the shifter. This will allow you access to the adjustment collar.
    2.
    3. To remove slop from the shifter, select first gear.
    4.
    5. The clearance between the shift lever adjustment collar tab and the side of the lever housing should be no greater than 1 / 16 of an inch.
    6.
    7. If the clearance is greater than 1 / 16 of an inch, loosen the adjusting collar and rotate the collar until the proper clearance is achieved.
    8.
    9. Tighten the clamping bolt and then install the shifter boot and knob.
