Fig. Typical VW transmission id tag
Volkswagen transaxles, whether manual or automatic, have two separate identification numbers stamped onto the case. The first sequence is the serial number, which indicates build date and gear ratios. The second number sequence (found on a different portion of the transaxle) identifies transaxle type, which can be one of five "families" of transaxle.
As with the different vehicle platforms and engine codes, sometimes headings and/or procedures in this guide are broken down by transaxle code. Make sure that you identify the transaxle in your vehicle, so you can refer to the appropriate procedure.
Automatic transaxle breakdown:
A1 platform: 010 transaxle
A2 platform: 010 transaxle
A3 platform: 096 or 01M transaxle
Manual transaxle breakdown:
A1 platform: 020 transaxle
A2 platform: 020 transaxle
A3 platform: 020 or 02A transaxle
