3.2L Engines
  1. Check the pump gears and housing for damage and any unusual scoring. The gears should turn freely.
  2.  
  3. Using a feeler gauge, check the clearance (backlash) between the gears. It should be no more than 0.008 inch (0.20 mm).
  4.  
  5. Using a feeler gauge and straight edge, check the clearance (axial) between the gears and housing. It should be no more than 0.004 inch (0.10mm)
  6.  
  7. If necessary, replace the pump.
  8.  

4.2L Engines

The oil pump is a sealed assembly.

Removal & Installation



3.2L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the oil pan.
  4.  
  5. Remove the bolts securing the oil pump and the oil pipe.
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil pump; be careful not to let the oil pump input shaft fall.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torque specifications:

    Oil pump: 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm)
     
    Oil pipe: 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm)

4.2L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower and upper oil pan.
  4.  
  5. Compress the chain tensioner and secure it with locking pin tool T40011 or equivalent.

  7. Unbolt the chain sprocket from the oil pump. Note that the text on the sprocket faces outward.
  8.  
  9. Unscrew the three bolts from the oil pump and the oil intake tube.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil pump.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torque specifications:

    Oil pump: 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)
     
    Oil pipe to oil pump: 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Chain sprocket bolt: 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm)
