Bushing Replacement



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove lower control arm from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Press out bonded rubber bushing using a hydraulic press. Use the appropriate sized press pieces and plates.
  6.  
  7. When installing, note the following:
    1. For the camber adjustment bolt bushing, press in bonded rubber bushing up to the stop. Then, press the center of the bonded rubber bushing in further so that the outside lip of the bushing will contact the control arm when installed.
    2.  
    3. For the caster adjustment bolt bushing, use a felt-tipped pen to draw an extension of the relief notch on the outer diameter of the bonded rubber bushing. Align the bushing according to the marking and press it in up to the stop.

    5. For the suspension strut bushing, press in the bushing so that it is flush with the control arm.

  9. Install the lower control arm and perform a wheel alignment.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this Section.
  2.  
  3. Measure the distance from the center of the wheel hub to the lip of the front fender.
  4.  
  5. Raise the vehicle and remove the wheel.

  7. Remove the wheel housing liner.
  8.  
  9. Using hooks VW 552 or equivalent, secure the upper control arm to the upper opening of the wheel housing.
  10.  
  11. Raise the lower control arm slightly to preload it. This prevents damage to the stud of the ball joint.
  12.  
  13. Remove the suspension strut from the lower control arm.
  14.  
  15. Remove the ball joint nut from the lower control arm and press off the ball stud using a ball joint puller.
  16.  
  17. Remove the nuts, then remove the lower control arm from the subframe and steering knuckle.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal. When installing the strut, raise the control arm to the measurement taken in the beginning of the procedure. The nut must be tightened when in this position. Perform a wheel alignment and observe the following torque specifications (use new hardware):

    Lower control arm to subframe: 133 ft. lbs. (180 Nm)
     
    Suspension strut to lower control arm: 111 ft. lbs. (150 Nm) plus an additional 1 / 4 turn
     
    Lower control arm to steering knuckle: 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm)
