Overhaul (Coil Spring Removal & Installation)




NOTE
The shock absorber portion of the strut is not rebuildable and must be replaced if necessary.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this Section.
  2.  
  3. Compress the coil spring using VAS 6046 or equivalent until the upper spring plate is no longer under load.
  4.  
  5. Remove the hex nut from the piston rod.
  6.  
  7. Remove the individual components of the suspension strut.

To install:

  1. Install the upper support in the upper spring plate. The raised part must line up with the depression.

  3. Make sure the coil spring is properly seated in the spring holder.
  4.  
  5. The upper spring plate must be set on the spring so that the raised part is located opposite the attachment for the link.
  6.  
  7. The center lines (A) and (B) must run parallel to one another. The end of the spring must lie against the stop on the support.

  9. Make sure that the protective sleeve is clipped into the upper spring plate.
  10.  
  11. Tighten a new hex nut on piston rod. Tighten to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Release the tension on spring compressor, then remove it from the coil spring.
  14.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel and raise the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the nuts securing the suspension strut to the body.

  7. Remove the halfshaft.
  8.  
  9. Make sure the lower control arm/steering knuckle assembly is properly supported.
  10.  
  11. Pull out bolt securing the strut to the lower control arm and remove suspension strut.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal. Perform a wheel alignment and observe the following torque specifications (use new hardware):

    Suspension strut to body nuts: 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)
     
    Suspension strut to lower control arm: 111 ft. lbs. (150 Nm) plus an additional 1 / 4 turn
     
    Upper control arm to steering knuckle: 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm)
     
    Tie rod to steering knuckle: 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm)
