3.2L Engines



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. The thermostat housing is located at the back of the engine. Remove any components necessary to make access to the housing easier.
  6.  
  7. Detach the cooling hoses and electrical connectors from it.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 3 bolts securing the thermostat housing to the engine, then remove it form the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Place the housing on a workbench and remove the 2 bolts securing the thermostat cover to the housing.
  12.  
  13. Carefully pull the cover from the housing. Be sure to note the position of the thermostat; the replacement should be installed in the same position.
  14.  
  15. Installation is the reverse of removal. Use new seals and o-rings. Tighten the thermostat cover and housing bolts to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).

4.2L Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine cooling fan assembly.
  6.  
  7. Mark the direction of rotation on the belt.
  8.  
  9. Rotate the tensioner using a 19mm wrench and secure it in the released position using tool T10060A or a similar sized pin punch. Remove the belt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the timing belt.
  12.  
  13. Remove the bolts from the thermostat housing, then remove the housing, seal and thermostat.

  15. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to use a new seal and install the thermostat with the valve facing up. Tighten the housing bolts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
