Timing Belt Cover

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



2.3L 4-Cylinder Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the cooling fan and shroud.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drive belts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the water pump pulley.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 4 retaining bolts and lift off the timing belt cover.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Clean all gasket mating surfaces thoroughly.
  2.  
  3. Install the timing belt cover using a new gasket.
  4.  
  5. Install the water pump pulley, and all drive belts.
  6.  
  7. Install the fan and shroud.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  12.  

B234F 4-Cylinder Engine

See Figure 1

  1. Remove the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the drive belts.
  4.  
  5. Remove the radiator fan, its pulley and the fan shroud.
  6.  
  7. Remove the drive belts for the power steering belts and the air conditioning compressor.
  8.  
  9. Beginning with the top cover, remove the retaining bolts and remove the timing belt covers.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Clean all gasket mating surfaces thoroughly.
  2.  
  3. Install the timing belt covers using new gaskets.
  4.  
  5. Install the water pump pulley, and all drive belts.
  6.  
  7. Install the fan and shroud.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  12.

2.9L 6-Cylinder Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery lead.
  2.  
  3. Remove the drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower timing belt cover, splash guard and vibration damper guard.
  6.  
  7. Remove the ignition coil cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the upper timing cover.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Install the upper timing belt cover.
  2.  
  3. Install the ignition coil cover.
  4.  
  5. Install the lower timing belt cover, splash guard and vibration damper guard.
  6.  
  7. Install the drive belt.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  

2.3L and 2.4L 5-Cylinder Engines

See Figures 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the coolant expansion tank and place it on top of the engine.
  4.  
  5. Remove the spark plug cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the drive belts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the fuel line clips.
  10.  
  11. Remove the right front wheel and loosen the inner fenderwell.
  12.  
  13. Remove the vibration damper guard and turn crankshaft pulley until the marks are lined up.
  14.  
  15. Remove the water pump pulley.
  16.  
  17. Remove the retaining bolts and lift off the timing belt cover.
  18.  

To install:
  1. Position the timing belt cover in place and secure with the retainer bolts.
  2.  
  3. Install the water pump pulley, followed by the drive belts.
  4.  
  5. Install the remaining components.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.
