Volvo refers to the filter element in the Crankcase Ventilation system as the flame guard.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



B230F, B230FT and B280F Engines

See Figure 1

Replace the flame guard at stated intervals.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the hose from the nipple on the intake manifold.
  4.  
  5. Check the hoses and nipples for condition and clogging. Failure to do so can result in loss of oil.
  6.  
  7. Remove the flame guard.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Clean out the nipple in the intake manifold.
  2.  
  3. Install the flame guard in the nipple.
  4.  
  5. Install the hose on the nipple.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the throttle pulley cover.
  4.  
  5. Undo the hose clamp and remove the inlet hose to air cleaner housing.
  6.  
  7. Remove the flame trap from the hose by rotating it 0.59 inches (15mm) to the left.
  8.  
  9. Remove the flame trap from the inlet hose using a small screwdriver or pick.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Inspect the hoses for clogs, and clean out if necessary.
  2.  
  3. Insert a new flame trap into the inlet hose and rotate it back to the original position.
  4.  
  5. Install the inlet hose onto the air cleaner housing and install the hose clamp.
  6.  
  7. Install the throttle pulley cover.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Rotate the flame trap outer casing 0.59 inches (15mm) to the left and remove the inlet hose.
  4.  
  5. Remove the flame trap from the inlet hose.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Inspect the hoses for clogs, and clean out if necessary.
  2.  
  3. Insert a new flame trap into the inlet hose.
  4.  
  5. Install the inlet hose onto the manifold and rotate the outer casing back to its original position.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.
