Camshaft, Bearings & Lifters

Inspection



  1. Check the camshaft journals for wear. If the journals are badly worn, replace the camshaft.
  2.  
  3. Check the cam lobes for damage. If the lobe is damaged or excessively worn, replace the camshaft.
  4.  
  5. Measure the cam lift height.
  6.  
  7. Check the cam surface for abnormal wear or damage, and replace if necessary.
  8.  
  9. Check each bearing for damage. If the bearing surface is excessively damaged, replace the cylinder head assembly or camshaft bearing cap, as necessary.
  10.  

Bearing Replacement



Check each bearing for damage. If the bearing surface is excessively damaged, replace the cylinder head assembly or camshaft bearing cap, as necessary.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Accessory drive belts
     
    Front cover
     
    Timing belt
     
    Ignition coil cover
     
    Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor or distributor, as equipped
     
    Switch holder and shield at left rear of the engine
     
    Ignition coils
     
    Camshaft sprockets
     
    Upper cylinder head
     
    Camshafts
     
    Hydraulic lash adjusters
     

  4.  


NOTE
Keep all valvetrain components in order for assembly.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Hydraulic lash adjusters
     
    Camshafts
     
    Upper cylinder head and tighten the bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (17 Nm)
     
    Camshaft sprockets and tighten the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
     
    Ignition coils
     
    Switch holder and shield at left rear of the engine
     
    CMP sensor or distributor, as equipped
     
    Ignition coil cover
     
    Timing belt
     
    Front cover
     
    Accessory drive belts
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Keep all valvetrain components in order for assembly.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Accessory drive belts
     
    Front cover
     
    Timing belt
     
    Ignition coil cover
     
    Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor or distributor, as equipped
     
    Switch holder and shield at left rear of the engine
     
    Ignition coils
     
    Camshaft sprockets
     
    Upper cylinder head
     
    Camshafts
     
    Hydraulic lash adjusters
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Hydraulic lash adjusters
     
    Camshafts
     
    Upper cylinder head and tighten the bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (17 Nm)
     
    Camshaft sprockets and tighten the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
     
    Ignition coils
     
    Switch holder and shield at left rear of the engine
     
    CMP sensor or distributor, as equipped
     
    Ignition coil cover
     
    Timing belt
     
    Front cover
     
    Accessory drive belts
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Keep all valvetrain components in order for assembly.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Accessory drive belts
     
    Front cover
     
    Timing belt
     
    Ignition coil cover
     
    Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor or distributor, as equipped
     
    Switch holder and shield at left rear of the engine
     
    Ignition coils
     
    Camshaft sprockets
     
    Cylinder head cover
     
    Camshafts and lifters
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the valve lifters and camshaft bearing positions and lobes with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install the valve lifters in their original positions.
  4.  
  5. Install the intake camshaft. Make sure that the groove in the rear edge of the camshaft extends across an imagined center line.
  6.  
  7. Install the exhaust camshaft. Make sure that the groove in the rear edge of the camshaft extends across an imagined center line.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the camshaft cover bolts alternately, keeping it parallel to the cylinder head using the press tools.
  10.  
  11. Using Special Tool 0951-2767 or equivalent, apply liquid gasket to the mating surface of the cylinder head cover.
    WARNING
    Ensure no liquid gasket material gets in the oil ducts of the cylinder head cover.

  13. Position the Press Tool 999-5454 in the spark plug holes. Fit the two M6 bolts under each press tool to set the right height.
  14.  
  15. Crosswise tighten the cylinder head cover parallel to the cylinder head with the press tool. Install all the bolts and tighten from the middle out to the edges. Tighten the bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (17 Nm). Remove the press tool and bolts under the tool.

    Camshaft sprockets and tighten the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
     
    Ignition coils
     
    Switch holder and shield at left rear of the engine
     
    CMP sensor or distributor, as equipped
     
    Ignition coil cover
     
    Timing belt
     
    Front cover
     
    Accessory drive belts
     
    Negative battery cable
