Strut (MacPherson Strut) Assembly

Removal & Installation



  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Brake hose
     
    ABS cable
     
    Anti-roll bar link
     
    Wheel spindle
     
    Strut upper mount nuts
     
    Strut assembly
     

  2.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut assembly and tighten the upper mount nuts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm)
     
    Wheel spindle and tighten the bolts to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm)
     
    Anti-roll bar link and tighten the bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm)
     
    ABS cable
     
    Brake hose
     
    Wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Check the wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.
  4.  

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Half shaft retainer bolt
     
    Ball joint from the wheel spindle
     
    Brake caliper
     
    Half shaft from the wheel hub
     
    Anti-roll bar link
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the lower strut mounting bolt and carefully tap the wheel spindle down until it release from the strut assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the three top strut mounting bolts and remove the strut assembly.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut assembly using new fasteners
     
    Wheel spindle to strut assembly and tighten to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm)
     
    Half shaft into the wheel hub
     
    Ball joint to the wheel spindle and tighten to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm)
     
    Half shaft retainer bolt
     
    Brake caliper
     
    Anti-roll bar link
     
    Wheel
     

  2.  

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Anti-roll bar link
     
    ABS sensor
     
    Bolts holding the strut in the wheel spindle
     
    Strut upper mount nuts
     
    Strut assembly
     

  2.  

To install:


NOTE
Use new fasteners for assembly.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut assembly and tighten the upper mount nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    Strut assembly onto the wheel spindle and tighten to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm) plus 90 degrees
     
    Anti-roll bar link and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    ABS sensor
     
    Wheel
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Outer tie rod end
     
    Wheel speed sensor and wiring bracket
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Brake hose bracket
     
    Lower ball joint
     
    Upper strut mount
     
    Strut assembly
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut assembly and tighten the upper mount nuts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
     
    Lower ball joint and tighten the nut to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm)
     
    Brake hose bracket
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Wheel speed sensor and wiring bracket
     
    Outer tie rod end and tighten the nut to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm)
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Check the wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Support the lower control arm with a jack stand.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Wheel speed sensor and wiring
     
    Strut bracket bolts
     
    Upper strut mount nuts
     
    Strut assembly
     

  6.  

To install:


NOTE
Use new fasteners for assembly.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut assembly and tighten the upper mount nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    Strut bracket bolts and tighten the bolts to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm) plus 90 degrees
     
    Wheel speed sensor and wiring
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Check the wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Support the lower control arm with a jack stand.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Wheel speed sensor and wiring
     
    Strut bracket bolts
     
    Upper strut mount nuts
     
    Strut assembly
     

  6.  

To install:


NOTE
Use new fasteners for assembly.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut assembly and tighten the upper mount nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    Strut bracket bolts and tighten the bolts to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm) plus 90°
     
    Wheel speed sensor and wiring
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Check the wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.
  4.  

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Brake hose
     
    ABS cable
     
    Anti-roll bar link
     
    Wheel spindle
     
    Strut upper mount nuts
     
    Strut assembly
     

  2.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut assembly and tighten the upper mount nuts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm)
     
    Wheel spindle and tighten the bolts to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm)
     
    Anti-roll bar link and tighten the bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm)
     
    ABS cable
     
    Brake hose
     
    Wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Check the wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.
  4.  

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Halfshaft retainer bolt
     
    Ball joint from the wheel spindle
     
    Brake caliper
     
    Halfshaft from the wheel hub
     
    Anti-roll bar link
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the lower strut mounting bolt and carefully tap the wheel spindle down until it release from the strut assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the three top strut mounting bolts and remove the strut assembly.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut assembly using new fasteners
     
    Wheel spindle to strut assembly and tighten to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm)
     
    Halfshaft into the wheel hub
     
    Ball joint to the wheel spindle and tighten to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm)
     
    Halfshaft retainer bolt
     
    Brake caliper
     
    Anti-roll bar link
     
    Wheel
     

  2.  

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Anti-roll bar link
     
    ABS sensor
     
    Bolts holding the strut in the wheel spindle
     
    Strut upper mount nuts
     
    Strut assembly
     

  2.  

To install:


NOTE
Use new fasteners for assembly.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut assembly and tighten the upper mount nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    Strut assembly onto the wheel spindle and tighten to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm) plus 90°
     
    Anti-roll bar link and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    ABS sensor
     
    Wheel
     

  2.  

Overhaul (Coil Spring Removal & Installation)



  1. Secure the strut in a vise.
  2.  
  3. Remove:

    The nut for the shock absorber bearing.
     
    Washer
     
    Mounting.
     

  4.  
  5. Take the load off the spring seat. Use hydraulic tool 951 2911 together with 951 2914.
  6.  
  7. Remove:

    The fixing nut on the shock absorber.
     
    The spring seat
     
    The spring
     
    The rubber bump stop and gaiter.
     

  8.  
  9. Check that the spring strut bearing (1), spring seat (2) and rubber bump stop with boot (3) are free of damage. Replace if necessary.

To install:

  1. Compress the new spring. Use spring clamps.

  3. Install:

    The bump stop with the boot
     
    The spring
     
    The spring seat.
     

  4.  
  5. Install the fixing nut. Tighten to 51 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Remove the spring clamps.
  8.  
  9. Install:

    Bearing
     
    Washer
     
    The nut. Tighten to 51 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
     

  10.  
  11. Install the spring strut in the bodywork using the new nuts. Tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the spring strut on the steering knuckle. Use new bolts and new nuts.
  14.  
  15. Adjust the spring strut and steering knuckle to the measured value. Tighten to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm), plus 90°.
  16.  
  17. Install:
    NOTE
    Ensure that the ABS sensor seat in the steering knuckle is absolutely clean. Clean the ABS sensor with a soft brush.



    The anti-roll bar link to the spring strut. Use a new nut. Tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm). Counterhold using a Torx® wrench to prevent damage to the boot
     
    The ABS sensor. Tighten to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     



    The ABS sensor cable in the bracket
     
    The wheel and tighten lug nuts to 81-103 ft. lbs. (110-140 Nm).
