Shock Absorbers

Testing & Inspection



  1. Check the rubber parts for damage or deterioration.
  2.  
  3. Check the spring for correct height, deformation, deterioration, or damage.
  4.  
  5. Check the shock absorber for abnormal resistance or unusual sounds.
  6.  
  7. Check for oil seepage around seals.
  8.  
  9. Replace as needed.
  10.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the side access panel in the trunk compartment
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Anti-roll bar
     
    Wheel
     
    Lower shock absorber mounting nut
     
    Lower trailing arm bolt
     
    Upper shock absorber nut
     
    Shock absorber
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Shock absorber and tighten the upper mounting nut to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    Lower trailing arm bolt using a new nut.
     
    Lower shock absorber mounting nut using a new nut.
     
    Wheel
     
    Anti-roll bar
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. The following applies to S60 and S80 models:
    1. Fold the rear seat back forward
    2.  
    3. Fold out the front edge of the side panel in the cargo compartment
    4.  
    5. Remove the soundproofing panels
    6.  

  4.  
  5. The following applies to V70 models:
    1. Remove the front floor hatch and sound proofing panels.
    2.  

  6.  
  7. Remove the upper shock absorber mounting nut using socket 999-5500 and a Torx® as a counterhold.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower shock absorber mounting bolt and remove the shock absorber.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Shock absorber and tighten the lower bolt to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm)
     
    Upper shock absorber nut using new nut and tighten to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm)
     

  2.  
  3. Install the following on S60 and S80 models:

    Soundproofing panels
     
    Side panel in the cargo compartment
     
    Rear seat back
     

  4.  
  5. Install the following on V70 models

    Front floor hatch
     
    Soundproofing panels
     

  6.  


NOTE
If car is equipped with Bi-xenon headlamps, the position sensor must be calibrated.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Upper shock absorber retainer bolt
     
    Lower shock absorber bolt
     
    Shock absorber
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install the shock absorber and tighten the bolts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the rear wheel.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Access panel
     
    Upper shock mount bolts
     
    Lower shock mount bolt
     
    Shock absorber
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install the shock absorber. Tighten the lower bolt to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm) and the upper bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the access panel.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the side access panel in the trunk compartment
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Anti-roll bar
     
    Wheel
     
    Lower shock absorber mounting nut
     
    Lower trailing arm bolt
     
    Upper shock absorber nut
     
    Shock absorber
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Shock absorber and tighten the upper mounting nut to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    Lower trailing arm bolt using a new nut.
     
    Lower shock absorber mounting nut using a new nut.
     
    Wheel
     
    Anti-roll bar
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Upper shock absorber mounting bolts
     
    Lower shock absorber mounting bolt
     
    Shock absorber
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Shock absorber
     
    Upper shock absorber bolts and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm)
     
    Lower shock absorber bolt
     
    Wheel
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. The following applies to S60 and S80 models:
    1. Fold the rear seat back forward
    2.  
    3. Fold out the front edge of the side panel in the cargo compartment
    4.  
    5. Remove the soundproofing panels
    6.

  5. The following applies to V70 models:
    1. Remove the front floor hatch and sound proofing panels.
    2.

    Shock absorber and tighten the lower bolt to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm)
     
    Upper shock absorber nut using new nut and tighten to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm)

  3. Install the following on S60 and S80 models:

    Soundproofing panels
     
    Side panel in the cargo compartment
     
    Rear seat back
     

  4.  
  5. Install the following on V70 models
    NOTE

    Front floor hatch
     
    Soundproofing panels

Front Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Access panel
     
    Upper shock mount bolts
     
    Lower shock mount bolt
     
    Shock absorber
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install the shock absorber. Tighten the lower bolt to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm) and the upper bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the access panel.
  4.  

All-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Upper shock absorber retainer bolt
     
    Lower shock absorber bolt
     
    Shock absorber
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install the shock absorber and tighten the bolts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the rear wheel.
  4.
