Upper Control Arms

Removal & Installation



  1. Remove the side access panels from inside the trunk compartment.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Anti-roll bar
     
    Shock absorber
     

  4.  
  5. Install a spring compressor and tighten until the shock absorber is loose inside the spring.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Upper shock nut
     
    Upper spring cap
     
    Coil spring
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Pull out the shock absorber piston as far as possible.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Coil spring
     
    Upper spring cap
     
    Upper shock nut and tighten to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Anti-roll bar
     
    Wheel
     

  4.  
  5. Reinstall the side access panels inside the trunk compartment.
  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheel
  4.  
  5. For right-hand side spring only:
    1. Place a transmission jack under the control arm to relieve the tension on the shock absorber.
    2.  
    3. Remove the shock absorber lower mounting bolt.
    4.  

  6.  
  7. Install spring compressor 951-2911 or suitable equivalent to compress the spring.
  8.  
  9. Remove the spring.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install spring compressor 951-2911 or suitable equivalent to compress the spring.
  2.  
  3. Install the spring.
  4.  


NOTE
Ensure that the spring engages in the control arm grooves.

  1. For right side spring only:
    1. Place a transmission jack under the control arm so the lower shock absorber mounting bolt can be installed.
    2.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Install plate 999 7079 to secure the spring.
  4.  
  5. Install a retaining strap between the control arms.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Brake caliper
     
    Shock absorber
     

  8.  
  9. Install a spring compressor and tighten until spring tension is relieved.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Grommet
     
    Striker plate 999 7079
     
    Coil spring
     

  12.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Coil spring
     
    Striker plate 999 7079 to secure the spring
     
    Grommet
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the spring compressor.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Shock absorber
     
    Brake caliper
     

  6.  
  7. Remove striker plate 999 7079
  8.  

  1. Remove the access panel located under the carpet in the trunk compartment.
  2.  
  3. Raise the rear suspension to remove the load from the rear springs.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Strut upper mount nuts
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Spring mounting nut
     
    Coil spring
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Coil spring and tighten the mounting nut to 29 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Strut upper mount nuts
     

  2.  
  3. Reinstall access panels and trunk compartment carpet.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    The wheel
     
    The brake caliper. Hang the brake caliper on a hook in the sub-frame.

  6.  
  7. Slacken off the bolt for the outer control arm mounting by 3 turns.
  8.  
  9. Use tool: 951 2923 , 999 7031 and 999 7030 together with threaded rod 999 7039 to press off the steering knuckle.

  10.  
  11. Remove the bolt for the drive shaft.
  12.  
  13. Press in the drive shaft and remove the spindle.
    NOTE
    Only press until the bushing releases from the splined area.

  14.  
  15. Slacken off the bolt 3 turns for the rear control arm mounting. Use puller 998 5434 with counterhold 999 7074.
  16.  
  17. Remove or disconnect the following:

    The bolt for the inner rear control arm mounting
     
    The two bolts for the inner front control arm mounting
     
    The control arm
     

  18.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    The bolts for the inner rear control arm mounting
     
    The bolts for the front inner control arm mounting
     
    The bolts for the outer control arm mounting
     

  2.  
  3. Install tensioner 999 5659.
    NOTE
    The tensioner must be positioned as far out as possible on the tensioner plates to achieve the correct lifting force.

  4.  
  5. Tighten the M12 bolts for the inner rear control arm mounting to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Tighten the M12 bolts for the front inner control arm mounting to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Tighten the M12 bolts for the outer control arm mounting to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
    NOTE
    Tighten the bolts when the rear suspension is in the normal position.

  10.  
  11. Remove tensioner 999 5659.
  12.  
  13. Install the wheel and tighten lug nuts to 81-103 ft. lbs. (110-140 Nm).
    NOTE
    If the vehicle is equipped with Bi-Xenon lamps, the position sensor must be calibrated. Carry out calibration according to VIDA vehicle communication (Function area 3, Electrical system, Rear Electronic Module).
