Wheel Bearings

Removal & Installation



  1. Remove the wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove ABS sensor and the cable from the wheel spindle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake caliper mounting bolts. Hang up the ABS line and the brake caliper. Use a piece of wire.
  6.  
  7. Remove the locating pin from the brake disc.
  8.  
  9. Remove the brake disc.
  10.  
  11. Remove the holder from the ABS line on the wheel spindle.
  12.  
  13. Press up the control arm slightly. Use a mobile jack.
  14.  
  15. Remove the bolts from rear wheel hub.
  16.  
  17. Remove the rear wheel hub.
  18.  


NOTE
The flange on the lower rear bolt must be ground off as illustrated before it can be removed from the wheel spindle.

To install:

  1. Install the rear wheel hub. Use new bolts and torque wrench with ring wrench kit. Tighten crosswise. Tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm). Then tighten to 49 ft. lbs. (65 Nm). Finally angle-tighten 60 deg.
  2.  


NOTE
The bolt without a flange has a washer which is included in the kit. Position the bolt in the rear lower bolt hole.

  1. Install the brake disc.
  2.  
  3. Install the locating pin for the brake disc. Tighten the locating pin. Tighten to 86 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the brake caliper. Use new bolts. Tighten to 46 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the ABS sensor.
  8.  


NOTE
Ensure that the sensor seat in the wheel spindle is completely clean.

  1. Clean the ABS sensor with a soft brush. Tighten the sensor. Tighten to 86 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the ABS-cable holder.
  4.  
  5. Install the wheel.
  6.  

The bearing and the hub make up one unit. The bearing cannot be replaced separately.

  1. Remove the hub cap.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel nuts and the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the clamp. Take the brake hose out of the support.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake caliper and support. Hang the brake caliper from a steel wire so as not to damage the brake hose.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolt. Remove the brake disc.
  10.  
  11. Remove the wheel hub.

To install:

  1. Clean the ABS sensor, the shaft journal and the hub.
  2.  
  3. Position the hub. Install the newnut.-Tighten to 91 ft. lbs. (120 Nm) +30 deg.
  4.  
  5. Clean and install the brake disc. Tighten to 46 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the brake caliper and the support. Tighten to 42 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the brake hose in the support. Install the retaining clip.
  10.  
  11. Check that the brake disc and wheel rim mating surfaces are clean. Install the wheel. Tighten the nuts loosely. Then tighten crosswise. Tighten to 84 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
  12.  

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Brake caliper
     
    Brake disc
     
    ABS sensor
     
    Wheel hub
     

  2.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Wheel hub and tighten to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm)
     
    ABS sensor and tighten to 42 inch lbs. (5 Nm)
     
    Brake disc
     
    Brake caliper
     
    Wheel
     

  2.  

  1. Remove the rear wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the bolt from the halfshaft/wheel hub.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake caliper mounting bolts. Hang the caliper up with a piece of wire
  6.  
  7. Remove the locating pin from the brake disc
  8.  
  9. Remove the brake disc
  10.  
  11. Remove the ABS-cable holder
  12.  
  13. Remove the ABS sensor. Hang up the sensor using a piece of wire.
  14.  
  15. Remove the spring strut from the lower control arm.
    NOTE
    the spring strut is slightly compressed.

  16.  
  17. Remove the anti-roll bar from the upper control arm.

  19. Use a Torx® wrench as a counterhold so that the rubber boot is not damaged.
  20.  
  21. Remove the tie rod from the wheel spindle. Angle the tie rod upwards so that the inner mounting of the control arm is exposed.
  22.  
  23. Remove the bolt holding the lower mounting from the control arm to the sub-frame. Bend the control arm downwards.
  24.  
  25. Remove the bolts from rear wheel hub.
  26.  
  27. Remove the rear wheel hub from the wheel spindle and halfshaft.
    NOTE
    Clean the splines on the halfshaft before installing the new wheel hub. Lubricate the splines using oil.

To install:

  1. Install the rear wheel hub. Use new bolts and torque wrench with ring wrench kit. Tighten crosswise. Tighten to 15 ft. (20 Nm). Then tighten to 49 ft. lbs. (65 Nm). Finally angle-tighten 60°.
  2.  
  3. Install the control arm to the sub-frame. Do not tighten yet.
  4.  
  5. Install the tie rod on the wheel spindle. Do not tighten yet.
  6.  
  7. Install the anti-roll bar link to the upper control arm. Tighten to 58 ft. lbs. (80 Nm). Use a Torx® wrench as a counterhold so that the boot is not damaged.
  8.  
  9. Press the suspension up to its normal position.
  10.  
  11. Install the lower control arm to the sub-frame. Tighten to 58 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the tie rod to the wheel spindle. Tighten to 58 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Remove the mobile jack.
  16.  
  17. Install the spring strut on the lower control arm. Use a larger jimmy bar to bend the control arm down and align the spring strut against the control arm.
  18.  
  19. Install the lower bolt for the spring strut. Tighten to 58 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the brake disc.
  22.  
  23. Install the locating pin for the brake disc. Tighten the locating pin. Tighten to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install the brake caliper. Use new bolts. Tighten to 46 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Install the ABS sensor.
    NOTE
    Ensure that the sensor seat in the wheel spindle is completely clean. Clean the ABS sensor with a soft brush. Tighten the sensor. Tighten to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm).

  29. Install the ABS-cable holder.
  30.  
  31. Install the bolt for the halfshaft. Use a new bolt. Tighten to 27 ft. lbs. (35 Nm) plus 90 deg.
  32.  
  33. Install the wheel.
  34.  

  1. Remove the wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove ABS sensor and the cable from the wheel spindle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake caliper mounting bolts. Hang up the ABS line and the brake caliper. Use a piece of wire.
  6.  
  7. Remove the locating pin from the brake disc.
  8.  
  9. Remove the brake disc.
  10.  
  11. Remove the holder from the ABS line on the wheel spindle.
  12.  
  13. Press up the control arm slightly. Use a mobile jack.
  14.  
  15. Remove the bolts from rear wheel hub.
  16.  
  17. Remove the rear wheel hub.
    NOTE

To install:

  1. Install the rear wheel hub. Use new bolts and torque wrench with ring wrench kit. Tighten crosswise. Tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm). Then tighten to 49 ft. lbs. (65 Nm). Finally angle-tighten 60 deg.

To install:

  1. Clean the ABS sensor, the shaft journal and the hub.
  2.  
  3. Position the hub. Install the new nut.-Tighten to 91 ft. lbs. (120 Nm) plus 30 deg.
  4.  
  5. Clean and install the brake disc. Tighten to 46 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the brake caliper and the support. Tighten to 42 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the brake hose in the support. Install the retaining clip.
  10.  
  11. Check that the brake disc and wheel rim mating surfaces are clean. Install the wheel. Tighten the nuts loosely. Then tighten crosswise. Tighten to 84 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
  12.  

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Brake caliper
     
    Brake disc
     
    ABS sensor
     
    Wheel hub
     

  2.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Wheel hub and tighten to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm)
     
    ABS sensor and tighten to 42 inch lbs. (5 Nm)
     
    Brake disc
     
    Brake caliper
     
    Wheel
     

  2.  

Front Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Dust cap
     
    Hub nut
     
    Hub and bearing assembly
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Hub and bearing assembly. Use a new hub nut and tighten it to 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm) plus 30 degrees.
     
    Dust cap
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Rear wheel
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Dust cap
     
    Hub nut
     
    Hub and bearing assembly
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Hub and bearing assembly. Use a new hub nut and tighten it to 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm) plus 30°.
     
    Dust cap
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Rear wheel
     

  2.  

All Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Parking brake shoes
     
    Parking brake cable
     
    Support arm
     
    Lower link arm
     
    Track rod
     
    Axle nut
     
    Wheel bearing housing
     
    Housing circlip
     

  4.  
  5. Press the hub out of the bearing and press the bearing out of the housing.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Press the new bearing into the housing. Install the circlip.
  2.  
  3. Support the inner race and press the hub into the bearing.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Wheel bearing housing
     
    Axle nut. Tighten the nut to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm) plus 60 degrees.
     
    Track rod. Tighten the bolt to 63 ft. lbs. (85 Nm).
     
    Lower link arm. Tighten the bolt to 45 ft. lbs. (60 Nm) plus 90 degrees
     
    Support arm. Tighten the nut to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
     
    Parking brake cable
     
    Parking brake shoes
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Rear wheel
     

  6.  
  7. Check the wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Parking brake shoes
     
    Parking brake cable
     
    Support arm
     
    Lower link arm
     
    Track rod
     
    Axle nut
     
    Wheel bearing housing
     
    Housing circlip
     

  4.  
  5. Press the hub out of the bearing and press the bearing out of the housing.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Press the new bearing into the housing. Install the circlip.
  2.  
  3. Support the inner race and press the hub into the bearing.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Wheel bearing housing
     
    Axle nut. Tighten the nut to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm) plus 60°
     
    Track rod. Tighten the bolt to 63 ft. lbs. (85 Nm).
     
    Lower link arm. Tighten the bolt to 45 ft. lbs. (60 Nm) plus 90°
     
    Support arm. Tighten the nut to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm)
     
    Parking brake cable
     
    Parking brake shoes
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Rear wheel
     

  6.  
  7. Check the wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.
  8.

The rear wheel bearings are sealed, pressed-in units, and no adjustment is possible.
