Neutral Safety (Start Inhibitor) Switch and Reverse Light Switch.

Print

ADJUSTMENT AND/OR REPLACEMENT

The neutral safety switch also serves to illuminate the reverse lights. On the earlier models, the switch is found in the transmission case. The system was later simplified and refined; from the mid-1970s onward, the switch is found on the left side of the gearshift selector.

Some switches can be adjusted by moving them on their slotted mounts or threads. Others are fixed in position and can only be removed and replaced.

1970-72 Models

See Figures 1 and 2

  1. Check the adjustment of the gear selector as outlined above. Place the gear selector in DRIVE and firmly apply the parking brake.
  2.
  3. On 1972 140 series and 164 models, remove the shift lever from the transmission.

Fig. Fig. 2: Adjust the neutral safety switch for correct operation-1972 models

  1. On 1970-71 models, connect a 12 volt test light to the back-up light terminals (2 and 4) and screw in the switch until the test light goes out. Disconnect the light and mark this position on the switch and transmission with a pencil. Connect the test light to the start inhibitor terminals (1 and 3) and screw out the switch until the light goes on. Disconnect the light and also mark this position. The proper adjustment is midway between these two marks.
  2.
  3. On 1972 models, connect a 12 volt test light to start inhibitor terminals (1 and 3), and screw in the switch until the test light goes out. Disconnect the light and mark this position on the switch and transmission with a pencil. Connect the test light to the back-up light terminals (2 and 4) and screw out the switch until the light goes on. Disconnect the light and also mark this position. The proper adjustment is midway between these two marks.
  4.
  5. When the proper adjustment is achieved, tighten the locknut; take care not to disturb the adjustment. Connect the four electrical leads.
  6.
  7. On 1972 140 series and 164 models, reinstall the control lever on the transmission.
  8.
  9. Block the wheels so that the car cannot move either forward or backward. Make sure that the engine can only be started with the gear selector in NEUTRAL or PARK. Make sure that the back-up lights operate only when the selector is placed in REVERSE.
  10.

1976 and Later 200 Series Models

See Figure 3

Some early 1976 models have a non-adjustable neutral switch located on the side of the case. All subsequent production models have an adjustable switch, located beneath the shifter quadrant in the tunnel. To adjust:

  1. Remove the shifter quadrant cover.
  2.
  3. Place the shifter lever in PARK. Check that the round switch contact centers over the indicating line for PARK. If not, loosen the two switch mounting screws and align the switch.

Fig. Fig. 3: Make sure the neutral safety switch aligns correctly with the shifter-1976 and later 200 series with adjustable switches

  1. Place the shifter lever in NEUTRAL. Repeat the check and adjust as necessary.
  2.
  3. If it is necessary to replace the switch, simply remove the two mounting screws and disconnect the wiring connector. Install the new switch and reconnect the wiring.
  4.
  5. Check that the engine starts only in PARK or NEUTRAL, and that the back-up lights work only in REVERSE.
  6.
