Volvo Coupes/Sedans/Wagons 1970-1989 Repair Guide

Manual Steering Gear

142, 144, 145, and 1800 Models

These models use a worm and roller type steering gear box. The oil level should be to the bottom of the filler plug in the gear box. Check the oil level at least twice a year and top up, if necessary, using the recommended oil.

242, 244, and 254 Models

See Figure 1

These models are equipped with a rack and pinion manual steering system which is permanently filled with lubricant. Two different types of rack and pinion systems are used, one manufactured by ZF and one by Cam. The ZF system is packed with grease while the Cam system is filled with 20W-50 motor oil. On both types, check the rubber bellows boots for rips and degeneration. If a ripped boot is noticed, replace it as soon as possible. Refer to Suspension & Steering of this repair guide for more information.
