Windshield Wiper Motor

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1800 Series-Complete Windshield Wiper Unit
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wiper arm and blade assemblies. Unscrew the wiper arm shaft nuts and lift off the washers and rubber seals.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the electrical wires at the wiper motor.
  6.  
  7. Remove the two wiper motor retaining bolts and lower the motor and linkage assembly out from under the dash.
  8.  
  9. Reverse the above procedure to install.
  10.  

1970-72 140 Series and 164 Models
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wiper arm and blade assemblies.
  4.  
  5. Remove the molded panel from under the dash.
  6.  
  7. Remove the heater switch.
  8.  
  9. Remove the instrument cluster as outlined in Instrument Cluster Removal and Installation.
  10.  
  11. Remove the intermediate defroster nozzle and disconnect the hoses.
  12.  
  13. Remove the retaining bolts and lower the wiper motor.
  14.  
  15. Install the motor and secure the retaining bolts.
  16.  
  17. Replace the defroster nozzle and connect its hoses.
  18.  
  19. Reinstall the instrument cluster.
  20.  
  21. Install the heater switch and the molded panel below the dash.
  22.  
  23. Reinstall the wiper arm and blade assemblies, making sure that the blades will be correctly positioned on the glass.
  24.  

1973-75 140 Series, 164 Models and 240 Series

See Figures 1, 2 and 3

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the drive link from the wiper motor lever by unsnapping the locking tab underneath the dashboard.

  1. Open the hood and disconnect the plug contact from the motor, located on the firewall.
  2.  
  3. Remove the three attaching screws and lift out the motor.
  4.  

To install:
  1. When reinstalling,take care to transfer the rubber seal, rubber damper, and spacer sleeves to the new motor. Position the motor and secure its mounting screws. Connect the plug.
  2.  
  3. Under the dash, connect the drive link and make sure it is locked in place.
  4.  
  5. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  

All 1976 and Later 200 Series Models

See Figure 4

This procedure includes wiper drive link removal and installation.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.

  1. Remove the right side-panel and remove the panel under the dashboard (beneath the glove box).
  2.  
  3. Remove the defroster hoses and remove the glove box.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wiper arms.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the wiper assembly and lift it out through the glove box opening.
  8.  
  9. Reverse the above procedure to install.
  10.  

700 Series

See Figure 5

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable
  2.  
  3. Remove the wiper arms and remove the rubber boot at the base of the arm.
  4.  
  5. Lift the hood to its uppermost position by pushing the catch on the hood hinges.
  6.  
  7. Release the washer hoses from the clips along the edge of the cowl. Unscrew the cowl retaining bolts. Older cars may use plastic clips instead of bolts to hold the cowl in place. Lower the hood to its normal position.
  8.  
  9. Remove the cowl by pulling it forward and then rotating the front edge upward. Close the hood.
  10.  
  11. Unscrew the bolts which hold the linkage assembly. One of the bolts is hidden beneath a rubber cap.

  1. Remove the cover from the wiper motor, cut the cable tie and disconnect the plug to the motor.
  2.  
  3. Unscrew the spindle nut on the motor and the three bolts holding the motor to the linkage. Lift the motor free of the linkage.
  4.  

To install:
  1. When reassembling, make sure the wipers are in the park position.
  2.  
  3. After the motor is secure on the linkage and the linkage is mounted on the car, visually check for any possible interference between the moving parts and the wiring. Always reinstall the wire tie on the motor harness.
  4.  
  5. Make sure the cowl is properly seated before installing the bolts. Install the washer hoses in their clips, replace the rubber boots and install the wiper arms. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.
