Front Crankshaft Seal

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Fuel line clips
     
    Coolant recovery tank
     
    Accessory drive belts
     
    Right front wheel
     
    Inner fender liner
     
    Front cover
     
    Timing belt
     
    Crankshaft timing sprocket
     
    Front crankshaft seal

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Front crankshaft seal so that it is flush with the oil pump housing
     
    Crankshaft timing sprocket and tighten the nut to 133 ft. lbs. (180 Nm)
     
    Timing belt
     
    Front cover
     
    Inner fender liner
     
    Right front wheel
     
    Accessory drive belts
     
    Coolant recovery tank
     
    Fuel line clips
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  4.  

8-Cylinder Engines
  1. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  2.  
  3. Remove the right front wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove 1 plastic nut of the wheel arch liner. Bend aside the wheel arch liner.
  6.  
  7. Install counterhold 999 7196. Undo the center bolt.
  8.  
  9. Insert bolt 999 7198 in the center hole of the crankshaft.
  10.  
  11. Install puller 999 5304. Pull off the crankshaft damper.

  13. Remove the seal using puller 999 5069. Screw 999 7198 in the center hole of the crankshaft.

To install:

  1. Install a new seal with drift 999 7197. Pull the drift in to the stop with the old center bolt. Remove the drift.
  2.  
  3. Clean the surface for the sealing ring on the crankshaft damper with cloth 951 1024.
  4.  
  5. Install the crankshaft damper. Install bolt 999 7198 in the center hole of the crankshaft.
  6.  
  7. Install counterhold 999 7196, drift 999 7198 and press the crankshaft damper in to the stop using the old center bolt. Tighten to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Remove the center bolt and discard it.
  10.  
  11. Install tools 999 7198 and 999 7198.
  12.  
  13. Insert a new bolt at the crankshaft damper and tighten:

    Step 1: 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm)
     
    Step 2: back off at least 1 turn
     
    Step 3: 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    Step 4: plus 90°
     

  14.  
  15. Remove counterhold 999 7196.
  16.  
  17. Install the wheel arch liner; tighten the plastic nut.
  18.  
  19. Install the right front wheel.
  20.  
  21. Lower the vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Installing the auxiliary belt.
  24.  
  25. Start the engine and check for leaks and proper function.
  26.  

5- & 6-Cylinder Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Fuel line clips
     
    Coolant recovery tank
     
    Accessory drive belts
     
    Right front wheel
     
    Inner fender liner
     
    Front cover
     
    Timing belt
     
    Crankshaft timing sprocket
     
    Front crankshaft seal

To install:
