Strut (MacPherson Strut) Assembly

Removal & Installation



  1. Remove:

    The wheel
     
    The anti-roll bar link from the spring strut.
     

  2.  


NOTE
Use a Torx wrench as a counterhold so that the boot is not damaged.



The ABS line from the spring strut
 
The ABS sensor. Hang up the sensor using a piece of wire.
 

  1. Measure over the wheel spindle and spring strut at the upper bolt as illustrated. Before measuring clean off any dirt from the measuring surfaces. Note the measurement.
  2.  
  3. Remove both the bolts retaining the spring strut in the wheel spindle.
  4.  
  5. Remove:

    The three nuts holding the spring strut in the bodywork
     
    The spring strut.

To install:

  1. Install the spring strut in the bodywork using the new nuts. Tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the spring strut on the wheel spindle. Use new bolts and new nuts.
  4.  
  5. Adjust the spring strut and wheel spindle to the measured value.
  6.  
  7. Tighten to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm), plus 75 degrees.
  8.  
  9. Install:

    The anti-roll bar link to the spring strut. Use a new nut. Tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm). Counterhold using a Torx wrench to prevent damage to the boot
     
    The ABS sensor. Tighten to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm).

NOTE
Ensure that the ABS sensor seat in the wheel spindle is absolutely clean. Clean the ABS sensor with a soft brush.

  1. Remove:
    NOTE

  3. Measure over the steering knuckle and spring strut at the upper bolt as illustrated. Before measuring clean off any dirt from the measuring surfaces. Note the measurement.

  5. Remove both the bolts retaining the spring strut in the steering knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Remove:

    The three nuts holding the spring strut in the bodywork
     
    The spring strut

To install:

  1. Install the spring strut in the bodywork using the new nuts. Tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the spring strut on the steering knuckle. Use new bolts and new nuts.
  4.  
  5. Adjust the spring strut and steering knuckle to the measured value.
  6.  
  7. Tighten to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm), plus 75°.
  8.  
  9. Install:
    NOTE
    Ensure that the ABS sensor seat in the steering knuckle is absolutely clean. Clean the ABS sensor with a soft brush.



    The anti-roll bar link to the spring strut. Use a new nut. Tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm). Counterhold using a Torx wrench to prevent damage to the boot
     
    The ABS sensor. Tighten to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm).

    The wheel and tighten to 102 ft. lbs. (138 Nm).
     

  10.  

Overhaul (Coil Spring Removal & Installation)



  1. Secure the strut in a vise.
  2.  
  3. Remove:

    The nut for the shock absorber bearing.
     
    Washer
     
    Mounting.
     

  4.  
  5. Take the load off the spring seat. Use hydraulic tool 951 2911 together with 951 2914.
  6.  
  7. Remove:

    The fixing nut on the shock absorber.
     
    The spring seat
     
    The spring
     
    The rubber bump stop and gaiter.
     

  8.  
  9. Check that the spring strut bearing (1), spring seat (2) and rubber bump stop with boot (3) are free of damage. Replace if necessary.

To install:

  1. Compress the new spring to a length of approximately 10 inches (260mm). Use spring clamps.

  3. Install:

    The bump stop with the boot
     
    The spring
     
    The spring seat.
     

  4.  
  5. Install the fixing nut. Tighten to 51 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Remove the spring clamps.
  8.  
  9. Install:

    Bearing
     
    Washer
     
    The nut. Tighten to 51 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
     

  10.  
  11. Install the spring strut in the bodywork using the new nuts. Tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the spring strut on the steering knuckle. Use new bolts and new nuts.
  14.  
  15. Adjust the spring strut and steering knuckle to the measured value. Tighten to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm), plus 90°.
  16.  
  17. Install:
    NOTE
    Ensure that the ABS sensor seat in the steering knuckle is absolutely clean. Clean the ABS sensor with a soft brush.



    The anti-roll bar link to the spring strut. Use a new nut. Tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm). Counterhold using a Torx wrench to prevent damage to the boot
     
    The ABS sensor. Tighten to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     



    The ABS sensor cable in the bracket
     
    The wheel and tighten lug nuts to 102 ft. lbs. (138 Nm).
