Upper Control Arms

Removal & Installation



  1. Raise the car.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheels.
  4.  
  5. Install tensioner 999 5659. See the tensioner installation material under -Rear Shock Absorber-.
  6.  
  7. Remove position sensor for Bi-Xenon lamps.
  8.  
  9. Remove:

    The bolt for the mounting for the lateral link
     
    The bolt holding the control arm in the wheel spindle.
     

  10.  
  11. Lower the control arm with the tensioner. The spring is now unloaded.
  12.  
  13. Lower the tensioner. Twist the tensioner so that it is positioned along the length of the car.
  14.  
  15. Press the control arm down by hand. Remove the spring.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Install the new spring.
  2.  
  3. Check that the spring is correctly installed in the lower spring seat.
  4.  
  5. Lift the removed control arm by hand. Position the tensioner in the rails.
  6.

NOTE
The tensioner must be positioned as far out as possible on the tensioner plates to achieve the correct lifting force.

  1. Lift the control arms so that the bolt for the control arm and lateral link can be installed. Align the bolt. Tighten by hand. Do not tighten yet.
  2.  
  3. Lower the tensioner. Install the bolt in the lower mounting for the shock absorber. Do not tighten yet.
  4.  
  5. Tension the control arms to the normal position.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the bolts for the control arm, lateral link and shock absorber. M12
  8.  
  9. Install the position sensor for Bi-Xenon lamps. .
  10.  
  11. Remove the tensioner.
  12.  
  13. Install the wheel.
  14.  


NOTE
If the car is equipped with Bi-Xenon lamps, the position sensor must be calibrated.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    The wheel
     
    The brake caliper. Hang the brake caliper on a hook in the sub-frame.

  7. Slacken off the screw for the outer control arm mounting by 3 turns.
  8.  
  9. Use tool: 951 2923 , 999 7031 and 999 7030 together with threaded rod 999 7039 to press off the steering knuckle.

  11. Remove the bolt for the drive shaft.
  12.  
  13. Press in the drive shaft and remove the spindle.
    NOTE
    Only press until the bushing releases from the splined area.

  15. Slacken off the screw three turns for the rear control arm mounting. Use puller 998 5434 with counterhold 999 7074.
  16.  
  17. Remove or disconnect the following:

    The bolt for the inner rear control arm mounting
     
    The two bolts for the inner front control arm mounting
     
    The control arm
     

  18.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    The bolts for the inner rear control arm mounting
     
    The bolts for the front inner control arm mounting
     
    The bolts for the outer control arm mounting
     

  2.  
  3. Install tensioner 999 5659.
    NOTE
    The tensioner must be positioned as far out as possible on the tensioner plates to achieve the correct lifting force.

  4.  
  5. Tighten the M12 bolts for the inner rear control arm mounting to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Tighten the M12 bolts for the front inner control arm mounting to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Tighten the M12 bolts for the outer control arm mounting to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
    NOTE
    Tighten the bolts when the rear suspension is in the normal position.

  10.  
  11. Remove tensioner 999 5659.
  12.  
  13. Install the wheel and tighten lug nuts to 102 ft. lbs. (138 Nm).
    NOTE
    If the vehicle is equipped with Bi-Xenon lamps, the position sensor must be calibrated. Carry out calibration according to VIDA vehicle communication (Function area 3, Electrical system, Rear Electronic Module).
