Variable Camshaft Timing Oil Control Solenoid

Print

Operation

The variable camshaft timing oil control solenoid (also called the Camshaft Position (CMP) actuator) is attached to each camshaft and is hydraulically operated in order to change the angle of the camshaft relative to Crankshaft Position (CKP). The variable camshaft timing oil control solenoid is controlled by the control module. The control module sends a pulse width modulated 12 volt signal to a variable camshaft timing oil control solenoid. The solenoid controls the amount of engine oil flow. The variable camshaft timing oil control solenoid can change the camshaft angle. The control module increases the pulse width to accomplish the desired camshaft operation.

Removal & Installation

2.4L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connectors (2, 3) from the appropriate Camshaft Position (CMP) actuator solenoid valve, also known as the Variable Camshaft Timing Oil Control Solenoid.
  6.
  7. Remove the exhaust CMP actuator solenoid valve bolt and valve (1), if required.
  8.
  9. Remove the intake CMP actuator solenoid valve bolt and valve (2), if required.
  10.
  11. Inspect the solenoid valve O-ring seals for damage, replace as necessary.

To install:

  1. Lubricate the solenoid valve O-ring seals with clean engine oil.
  2.
  3. Install the intake (2) CMP actuator solenoid valve and bolt, if required. Tighten the bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.
  5. Install the exhaust (1) CMP actuator solenoid valve and bolt, if required. Tighten the bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  6.
  7. Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connector (2, 3) to the appropriate CMP actuator solenoid valve.
  8.
  9. Install the air cleaner outlet duct.
  10.

Testing

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Ensure the vehicle has the proper oil viscosity.
  4.
  5. Observe the engine oil level. The engine oil level should be within the operating range.
  6.
  7. Allow the engine to reach operating temperature.
  8.
  9. Increase the engine speed to 1,500 RPM.
  10.
  11. Command each solenoid to 25 percent. The angle desired parameter should match the solenoid actual parameter.
