Vehicle Speed Sensor

Operation

The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) system is a pulse generator consisting of a speed sensor assembly, located in the case extension, and a toothed vehicle speed sensor reluctor wheel, which is pressed onto the final drive carrier assembly. As the vehicle drives forward, the vehicle speed sensor reluctor wheel rotates. This rotation produces a variable AC signal in the pickup coil that is proportional to vehicle speed. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) uses this signal in order to calculate vehicle speed, shift timing, and gear ratios. If the PCM detects a low vehicle speed with a high engine speed while in a drive range, then a DTC is set.

Removal & Installation

Automatic Transaxle
4T45-E
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.
  5. Raise and support the vehicle.
  6.
  7. Remove the electrical connector from the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS).
  8.
  9. Remove the retaining stud and the VSS. Pull straight out in order to avoid damage to the case.
  10.

To install:

  1. Clean and dry the VSS.
  2.
  3. Install the VSS and the retaining stud. Tighten the stud to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  4.
  5. Install the electrical connector to the VSS.
  6.
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.

Manual Transaxle
Getrag 5-Speed
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) electrical connector.
  6.
  7. Remove the VSS retaining bolt.
  8.
  9. Remove the VSS.
  10.

To install:

  1. Install the VSS.
  2.
  3. Install the VSS retaining bolt. Tighten the bolt to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  4.
  5. Connect the VSS electrical connector.
  6.
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.

Testing

  1. Ensure the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is correctly tightened to the transmission housing.
  2.
  3. Install a scan tool.
  4.
  5. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
    NOTE
Before clearing any DTC-s, use the scan tool in order to record the Freeze Frame and Failure Records. Using the Clear Info function erases the Freeze Frame and Failure Records from the PCM. Record the DTC Freeze Frame and Failure Records, then clear any DTC-s.

    WARNING
Support the lower control arms in the normal horizontal position in order to avoid damage to the drive axles. Do not operate the vehicle in gear with the wheels hanging down at full travel.

  6.
  7. Raise and support the drive wheels.
  8.
  9. Start and idle the engine.
  10.
  11. Place the transmission in DRIVE.
  12.
  13. Monitor Transmission OSS on the scan tool.
  14.
  15. With the drive wheels rotating, increase and decrease the throttle position.
  16.
  17. The Transmission OSS RPM should increase when the wheel speed increases.
