2.2L Engine



Before servicing any vehicle, please be sure to read the precautions section, which deals with personal safety, prevention of component damage, and important points to take into consideration when servicing a motor vehicle.

  1. Turn the ignition OFF .
    NOTE
    Engine coolant must be drained below the level of the engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT) sensor.

  2.  
  3. Disconnect the ECT sensor harness connector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ECT.
  6.  

To install:


NOTE
Tap out sensor mounting hole in engine head to remove any thread sealant residue. Clean any sealant residue from old sensor and apply RTV sealant to threads if old sensor is going to be reused.

  1. Apply thread sealant Saturn P/N 21485277 LOCTITE®242 Threadlocker, or equivalent, to sensor threads.
  2.  
  3. Install the ECT sensor. Tighten the ECT sensor to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the ECT sensor harness connector. Push in the connector until a click is heard, then pull back to confirm a positive engagement.
  6.  
  7. Fill engine coolant to proper level.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

NOTE

  3. Install the ECT sensor. Tighten the engine coolant temperature sensor to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).

  5. Connect the ECT sensor harness connector. Push in the connector until a click is heard, then pull back to confirm a positive engagement.
  6.  
  7. Fill engine coolant to proper level.
  8.  

2.4L Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    WARNING
    Use care when handling the coolant sensor. Damage to the coolant sensor will affect the operation of the fuel control system.

  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector from the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor.
  6.  
  7. Remove the ECT sensor.
  8.  

To install:


WARNING
Replacement components must be the correct part number for the application. Components requiring the use of the thread locking compound, lubricants, corrosion inhibitors, or sealants are identified in the service procedure. Some replacement components may come with these coatings already applied. Do not use these coatings on components unless specified. These coatings can affect the final torque, which may affect the operation of the component. Use the correct torque specification when installing components in order to avoid damage.

  1. If reinstalling the original sensor, or if installing a NEW sensor without a sealer, coat the threads with sealant.
  2.  
  3. Install the ECT sensor. Tighten the sensor to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connector to the ECT sensor.
  6.  
  7. Fill the cooling system to the proper level.
  8.  

3.0L Engine



Before servicing any vehicle, please be sure to read the precautions section, which deals with personal safety, prevention of component damage, and important points to take into consideration when servicing a motor vehicle.

  1. Record all pre-set radio stations.
  2.  
  3. Turn the ignition OFF .
  4.  
  5. Loosen the radiator drain plug and drain the coolant below the level of coolant in the coolant surge tank using a drain pan. Retighten the drain plug.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the battery cover screw and remove the battery cover.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the positive battery cable.

  13. Loosen the battery hold down bolt and remove the battery and battery hold down.
  14.  
  15. Remove the underhood fuse block (UHFB) cover.
  16.  
  17. Remove the positive battery cable and electric power steering (EPS) wire from B+ terminal at UHFB.
  18.  
  19. Open all retainer clips and remove all cables, lines and harnesses from battery cooling box.
  20.  
  21. Loose the UHFB block connector retaining bolts.
  22.  
  23. Unfasten UHFB from its housing and disconnect forward lamp harness.
  24.  
  25. Remove the battery cooling box bolts.

  27. Apply RTV sealant (or equivalent) to the sensor threads.
  28.  
  29. Install the ECT sensor.
  30.  
  31. Tighten the engine coolant temperature sensor to 13 ft. lbs.(18 Nm).

  33. Connect the ECT sensor harness connector. Push the connector in until the lock position is felt, then pull back to confirm engagement.
    NOTE
    Alignment of inlet and outlet ducts with the battery cooling box is critical to ensure proper airflow to the battery.

  35. Position the battery cooling box on the tray so that the inlet and outlet ducts are properly aligned.
    WARNING
    Overtightening the battery cooling bolts will break/crack plastic.

  37. Install the battery cooling box bolts. Tighten the battery cooling box bolts to 11 ft. lbs (15 Nm).
  38.  
  39. Install the battery cooling box side support bolt. Tighten the battery cooling box side support to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  40.  
  41. Connect the forward lamp harness to the UHFB and tat the UHFB into the housing.
  42.  
  43. Install the UHFB connector retaining bolts.
  44.  
  45. Tighten the harness connector retainer to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
  46.  
  47. Secure all cables, lines and harnesses into the retaining clips.
  48.  
  49. Attach the positive battery cable and the EPS wire to B+ terminal at UHFB and tighten the nut.
  50.  
  51. Tighten the UHFB B+ terminal nut to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  52.  
  53. Insert the battery and install the battery hold down bolt. Tighten the battery hold down bolt to 11 ft. lbs (16 Nm).
  54.  
  55. Connect the positive battery cable to the battery. Tighten the battery terminal bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (17 Nm).
  56.  
  57. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery. Tighten the battery terminal bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (17 Nm).
  58.  
  59. Install the UHFB cover.
  60.  
  61. Install the battery cooling box cover and tighten the screws.
  62.  
  63. Tighten the battery cooling box cover screws to 18 inch lbs (2 Nm).
  64.  
  65. Refill the cooling system to the proper level.
  66.  
  67. Program the present radio stations.
  68.  

3.5L Engine



Before servicing any vehicle, please be sure to read the precautions section, which deals with personal safety, prevention of component damage, and important points to take into consideration when servicing a motor vehicle.

  1. Turn ignition OFF
    NOTE
    Engine coolant must be drained below the level of the engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT) sensor.

  2.  
  3. Disconnect the ECT sensor harness connector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ECT.
    NOTE
    Tap out sensor mounting hole in engine head to remove any thread sealant residue. Clean any sealant residue from old sensor and apply RTV sealant to threads if old sensor is going to be reused.

To install:

  1. Apply thread sealant SA P/N 21485277 LOCTITE®242 Threadlocker (or equivalent) to sensor threads.
  2.  
  3. Install the ECT sensor with a new O-ring and tighten to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm)
  4.  
  5. Connect the ECT sensor harness connector. Push in the connector until a click is heard, then pull back to confirm a positive engagement.
  6.  
  7. Fill engine coolant to proper level.
  8.  

Sensor 1
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the coolant to a level below the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector from the ECT sensor.
  6.  
  7. Remove the ECT sensor and O-ring seal.
  8.  

To install:


NOTE
Clean out the sensor hole with a tap in order to remove any thread sealant residue. Clean any sealant residue from the old sensor and apply sealant to the threads if the old sensor is being reused.

  1. Apply thread sealant SA P/N 21485277, Loctite 242® Threadlocker, or equivalent to the sensor threads.
  2.  
  3. Install the NEW ECT sensor with a new O-ring. Tighten the sensor to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connector to the ECT sensor.
  6.  
  7. Fill the cooling system to the proper level.
  8.  

Sensor 2
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the coolant to a level below the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector (1) from the ECT sensor.
  6.  
  7. Remove the ECT sensor (2) and O-ring seal (3).

To install:


NOTE

  1. Apply thread sealant SA P/N 21485277, Loctite 242® Threadlocker, or equivalent to the sensor threads.
  2.  
  3. Install the NEW ECT sensor (2) with a new O-ring (3). Tighten the sensor to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connector (1) to the ECT sensor.
  6.  
  7. Fill the cooling system to the proper level.
  8.
