Bearing Replacement



Check each bearing for damage. If the bearing surface is excessively damaged, replace the cylinder head assembly or camshaft bearing cap, as necessary.

Inspection



2.2L Engine
  1. Inspect the camshaft journals and lobes for wear or scoring.
  2.  
  3. Inspect the camshaft sprocket alignment notch for damage.
  4.  
  5. Inspect the camshaft cover for damage or loose oil control baffles.
  6.  
  7. Clean the camshaft cover.
  8.  
  9. Wash the camshaft in solvent.
  10.  
  11. Oil the camshaft.
  12.  
  13. Inspect the camshaft cover for cracks or other signs of damage.
  14.  

  1. Inspect the camshaft journals and lobes for wear or scoring.
  2.  
  3. Inspect the camshaft sprocket alignment notch for damage.
  4.  
  5. Inspect the camshaft cover for damage or loose oil control baffles.
  6.  
  7. Clean the camshaft cover.
  8.  
  9. Wash the camshaft in solvent.
  10.  
  11. Oil the camshaft.
  12.  
  13. Inspect the camshaft cover for cracks or other signs of damage.
  14.  

2.4L Engine
  1. Clean the camshaft in solvent.
  2.  
  3. Dry the camshaft with compressed air.
  4.  
  5. Inspect the camshaft for the following conditions:
    1. Worn, scored, or damaged bearing journals
    2.  
    3. Worn camshaft lobes
    4.  
    5. Damaged sprocket pin
    6.  

  6.  
  7. Measure the camshaft journals with a micrometer to be sure they are within specification.

  9. Measure for a bent camshaft or excessive camshaft runout using J 7872, Magnetic Base Dial Indicator.
  10.  
  11. Mount the camshaft in V-blocks between centers.
  12.  
  13. Use the J 7872 in order to measure for a bent camshaft.
  14.  
  15. Replace the camshaft if runout exceeds specifications.
  16.  
  17. Inspect the camshaft bearings and bearing cap surfaces for the following:
    1. Wear
    2.  
    3. Scoring
    4.  
    5. Overheating from lack of lubrication
    6.  

  18.  
  19. Inspect the bearing clearances with gauging plastic.
  20.  
  21. Inspect the camshaft for excessive end play.
  22.  

3.0L Engine
  1. Clean the camshaft in solvent.
  2.  
  3. Dry the camshaft with compressed air.
  4.  
  5. Inspect the camshaft for the following conditions:
    1. Worn, scored, or damaged bearing journals
    2.  
    3. Worn camshaft lobes
    4.  
    5. Damaged sprocket pin
    6.  

  6.  
  7. Measure the camshaft journals with a micrometer 1.099-1.101 inch  (27.939-27.960mm).

  9. Measure for a bent camshaft or excessive camshaft runout using J 7872, Magnetic Base Dial Indicator.
  10.  
  11. Mount the camshaft in V-blocks between centers.
  12.  
  13. Use the J 7872 in order to measure for a bent camshaft. Radial runout 0.06 mm (0.0023 in).
  14.  
  15. Replace the camshaft if runout exceeds specifications.
  16.  
  17. Inspect the camshaft bearings and bearing cap surfaces for the following:
    1. Wear
    2.  
    3. Scoring
    4.  
    5. Overheating from lack of lubrication
    6.  

  18.  
  19. Inspect the bearing clearances with gauging plastic.
  20.  
  21. Inspect the camshaft for excessive end play.
  22.  

The camshaft bearing surfaces are machined into the cylinder head and are not serviceable.

3.5L Engine
  1. Clean the camshaft and inspect for pitted, scored or excessively worn lobes.
  2.  
  3. Measure the diameter of each bearing journal.
    NOTE
    In order to properly measure the camshaft journal bores, the rocker arm shafts must be bolted to the cylinder heads.

  5. Remove the rocker arms (215, 218) and springs (219) from the shafts (220, 221).

  7. Lubricate the bolt threads and flanges with clean engine oil.
  8.  
  9. Install the rocker arm shafts and bolts to the cylinder heads.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the left cylinder head rocker shaft bolts in sequence:
    1. Tighten the bolts a first pass to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Tighten the bolts a final pass to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).

  13. Tighten the right cylinder head rocker shaft bolts in sequence:
    1. Tighten the bolts a first pass to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).

    3. Tighten the bolts a final pass to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).

  15. Clean the bearing surfaces in the cylinder head and measure the inside diameter (ID) of each camshaft bearing surface. Also, inspect for an out-of-round condition.

  17. Calculate the camshaft-to-journal clearance:
    1. Camshaft-to-journal clearance - new: 0.002-0.008 inch (0.05-0.2mm)
    2.  
    3. Camshaft-to-journal clearance - service limit 0.008 inch (0.2mm)
    4.

  19. Install the camshaft into V-blocks and use the J 7872 to measure the runout.
    1. Camshaft total runout - new: 0.001 inch (0.03mm)
    2.  
    3. Camshaft total runout - service limit: 0.002 inch (0.04mm)
    4.

  21. Identify the camshaft lobes:
    1. Exhaust (1)
    2.  
    3. Intake primary - right cylinder head (2)
    4.  
    5. Intake mid (3)
    6.  
    7. Intake secondary - right cylinder head (4)
    8.  
    9. Intake secondary - left cylinder head (5)
    10.  
    11. Intake primary - left cylinder head (6)

  23. Measure the camshaft lobe height. If the measurement is less than the specification, replace the camshaft.
    1. Intake primary lobe height: 1.3796 inch (35.041mm)
    2.  
    3. Intake mid lobe height: 1.4348 inch (36.445mm)

    5. Intake secondary lobe height: 1.3891 inch (35.284mm)
    6.  
    7. Exhaust lobe height: 1.4302 inch (36.326mm)

    3. Lubricate the bolt (214) threads and flanges with clean engine oil.
    4.  
    5. Install the rocker arm shafts (220, 221) and bolts (214) to the cylinder heads.

    7. Tighten the left cylinder head rocker shaft bolts in sequence:

      Tighten the bolts a first pass to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm)

    11. Install the camshafts (209), caps (211), and bolts (212).

    13. Tighten the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).

    15. Seat the camshaft by pushing it toward the rear of the cylinder head.
    16.  
    17. Use the SA9179NE Dial Indicator in order to measure the end play. Zero the dial indicator against the end of the camshaft. Push the camshaft forward and rearward and measure the end play:

      Camshaft end play-new: 0.05-0.2 mm (0.002-0.008 in)
       
      Camshaft end play-service limit: 0.2 mm (0.008 in)

NOTE

  1. Remove the rocker arms (215 and 218) and springs (219) from the shafts (220 and 221).

  4.  
  5. Install the rocker arm shafts (220, 221) and bolts (214) to the cylinder heads.

  15. Seat the camshaft by pushing it toward the rear of the cylinder head.
  16.  
  17. Use the SA9179NE Dial Indicator in order to measure the end play. Zero the dial indicator against the end of the camshaft. Push the camshaft forward and rearward and measure the end play:
    1. Camshaft end play - new: 0.05-0.2 mm (0.002-0.008 in)
    2.  
    3. Camshaft end play - service limit: 0.2 mm (0.008 in)
