Crankshaft Front Seal

Removal & Installation



On the 2.2L engines the front crankshaft seal is located in the timing chain front cover. Refer to the timing chain procedure for information about removing the front cover and replacing the seal.

2.2L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the crankshaft damper.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drive belt tensioner.
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine front cover to water pump bolt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the remaining engine front cover bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the engine front cover.

To install:

  1. If removed install a new engine front cover gasket.
  2.  
  3. Install the engine front cover.
  4.  
  5. Install the engine front cover bolts. Tighten the engine front cover bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the water pump bolt. Tighten the water pump bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the drive belt tensioner.
  10.  
  11. Install the drive belt tensioner bolt. Tighten the drive belt tensioner bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the crankshaft damper.
  14.  

2.4L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the crankshaft damper. Refer to Crankshaft Damper removal and installation.
  4.  
  5. Use a flat-bladed tool to remove the seal from the front cover.

To install:

  1. Use the J 35268-A to install the crankshaft front oil seal to the engine front cover.
  2.  
  3. Install the crankshaft damper. Refer to Crankshaft Damper removal and installation.

3.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Timing belt
     
    Crankshaft gear
     

  4.  
  5. Drill a small pilot hole into the steel ring of the seal.
  6.  
  7. Screw in a self taping screw.
  8.  
  9. Use pliers to pull out the oil seal.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Coat the lip of the new oil seal with engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install the oil seal using a suitable seal installer.
  4.  
  5. Install the crankshaft gear and torque the bolt to 184 ft. lbs. (250 Nm) plus an additional 45 degrees then another 15 degrees.
  6.  
  7. Install the timing belt.
  8.  

3.5L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    The negative battery cable
     
    The timing belt
     
    The crankshaft gear
     

  4.  
  5. Drill a small pilot hole into the steel ring of the seal.
  6.  
  7. Screw in a self-tapping screw.
  8.  
  9. Use a pliers to pull out the oil seal.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Coat the lip of the new oil seal with engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install the oil seal using a suitable seal installer.
  4.  
  5. Install the crankshaft gear and torque the bolt to 181 ft. lbs. (245 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the timing belt.
  8.
