Removal & Installation

2.2L Engine

Before servicing any vehicle, please be sure to read the precautions section, which deals with personal safety, prevention of component damage, and important points to take into consideration when servicing a motor vehicle.

NOTE
It may be necessary to remove the chamfer (bevel) from the edge of an 18 mm socket in order to get full socket engagement on the thin headed flywheel bolts.

NOTE
Do not orientate the flywheel to the crankshaft. It is balanced separately from the engine.

  1. Remove the flywheel attaching bolt. Use the J 38122-A Harmonic Balancer Holder to prevent crankshaft rotation.
  2.
  3. Remove the flywheel, if the vehicle has a manual transmission.

  7. Remove the flywheel, if the vehicle has an automatic transmission.
  8.
  9. Clean the thread adhesive from the flywheel bolt holes. Use a nylon bristle brush to clean the holes in the crankshaft.
  10.

To install:

  1. Install the flywheel.
  2.
  3. Install the NEW bolts.
    WARNING
Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4.
  5. Holding the crankshaft damper with the J 38122-A Harmonic Balancer Holder , tighten the bolts evenly.
  6.
  7. Tighten the bolts to 39 ft. lbs. (53 Nm), plus 25 degrees using the J 45059 Angle Meter.
