Intake Manifold

Removal & Installation



2.2L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor electrical connector
     
    Air cleaner assembly
     
    Throttle body electrical connection
     
    Throttle cable and automatic transmission downshift cable from the throttle body
     
    Throttle body
     
    Intake manifold

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Intake manifold with a new gasket and torque the nuts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm) starting from the center and working outward
     
    Throttle body to the intake manifold and torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Throttle cable and automatic transmission downshift cable from the throttle body
     
    Throttle body electrical connection
     
    Air cleaner assembly
     
    Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor electrical connector
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Start the engine, check for leaks, and repair if necessary.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    The negative battery cable
     
    The Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor electrical connector
     
    The air cleaner assembly
     
    The throttle body electrical connection
     
    The throttle cable and automatic transaxle downshift cable from the throttle body
     
    The throttle body
     
    The intake manifold

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    The intake manifold with a new gasket and torque the nuts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm) starting from the center and working outward
     
    The throttle body to the intake manifold and torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    The throttle cable and automatic transaxle downshift cable from the throttle body
     
    The throttle body electrical connection
     
    The air cleaner assembly
     
    The IAT sensor electrical connector
     
    The negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Start the engine, check for leaks, and repair if necessary.
  4.  

3.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Air cleaner assembly
     
    Fuel line
     
    Manifold electrical connector
     
    Attachment of the purge solenoid and line from the rear of the manifold
     
    Brake booster line from the manifold
     
    Fuel injector and manifold control solenoid connections
     
    Resonator and bracket
     
    Positive Crankcase Valve (PCV) hose from the throttle body
     
    Throttle body bolts
     
    Throttle body cooling hose bracket bolts
     

  6.  
  7. Lay the throttle body over the master cylinder with the coolant hoses attached.

    Intake manifold-to-spacer bolts using a T-30 Torx®bit and a long 1 / 4 inch extension
     
    Lower manifold bolt located near the throttle body
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Spacer plate bolts, spacer and seals

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Intake manifold spacer with new seals. Apply Loctite®242 to the bolts and torque the bolts to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm) in sequence.

    Intake manifold with a new gasket and torque the bolts to 66 inch lbs. (7.5 Nm)
     
    Throttle body and gasket, tighten the bolts to 66 inch lbs. (7.5 Nm)
     
    PCV hose to the throttle body
     
    Resonator and bracket
     
    Fuel injector and manifold control solenoid connections
     
    Brake booster line to the manifold
     
    Fuel line
     
    Attachment of the purge solenoid and line to the rear of the manifold
     
    Manifold electrical connector
     
    Air cleaner assembly
     
    Negative battery cable

  3. Prime the fuel system by cycling the ignition ON for 5 seconds and OFF for 10 seconds a few times without cranking the engine.
  4.  
  5. Start the engine, check for leaks, and repair if necessary.
  6.  

3.5L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the outlet resonator/duct assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the throttle body.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hoses from the intake manifold.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the brake booster hose from the intake manifold.
  10.  
  11. Remove the intake manifold top cover nuts and bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove and discard the intake manifold top cover gasket.
  14.  
  15. Remove the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor .
  16.  
  17. Remove the air outlet duct bracket.
  18.  
  19. Remove the intake manifold nuts and bolts.
  20.  
  21. Remove the intake manifold and gasket and discard the gasket. Remove and discard the intake manifold gasket.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Install the intake manifold with a new gasket.
  2.  
  3. Install the intake manifold nuts and bolts in using two passes, on the first pass tighten to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm) and the second pass to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm) starting in the center and working outwards in a circular pattern.
  4.  
  5. Install the outlet duct bracket and nuts and tighten the nuts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the IAT sensor and tighten to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the intake manifold top cover gasket.
  10.  
  11. Install the intake manifold top cover, nuts, and bolts using two passes, on the first pass tighten to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm) and the second pass to 106 inch. lbs. (12 Nm) starting in the center and working outwards in a circular pattern.
  12.  
  13. Install the throttle body.
  14.  
  15. Connect the PCV hoses.
  16.  
  17. Connect the brake booster hose. Install the outlet resonator/duct assembly.
  18.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the outlet resonator/duct assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the throttle body.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hoses from the intake manifold.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the brake booster hose from the intake manifold.
  10.  
  11. Remove the intake manifold top cover nuts and bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove and discard the intake manifold top cover gasket.
  14.  
  15. Remove the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor .
  16.  
  17. Remove the air outlet duct bracket.
  18.  
  19. Remove the intake manifold nuts and bolts.
  20.  
  21. Remove the intake manifold and gasket and discard the gasket.
  22.  
  23. Remove and discard the intake manifold gasket.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Install the intake manifold with a new gasket.
  2.  
  3. Install the intake manifold nuts and bolts in using two passes. On the first pass, tighten to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm) and the second pass to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm) starting in the center and working outwards in a circular pattern.
  4.  
  5. Install the outlet duct bracket and nuts and tighten the nuts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the IAT sensor and tighten to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the intake manifold top cover gasket.
  10.  
  11. Install the intake manifold top cover, nuts, and bolts using two passes. On the first pass, tighten to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm) and the second pass to 106 inch. lbs. (12 Nm) starting in the center and working outwards in a circular pattern.
  12.  
  13. Install the throttle body.
  14.  
  15. Connect the PCV hoses.
  16.  
  17. Connect the brake booster hose.
  18.  
  19. Install the outlet resonator/duct assembly.
  20.
