Oil Pan

Removal & Installation



2.2L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Oil dipstick tube
     

  6.  
  7. Install an engine support fixture.

    Right hand engine mount and raise the engine 3 inches using the support tool
     
    Lower A/C compressor bolt
     
    Oil pan bolts
     

  8.  
  9. Using a flat blade tool, pry the oil pan from the engine block.

To install:

  1. Apply a 0.08 in. (2mm) bead of RTV sealer to the pan flange. Be sure the RTV is applied to the inner side of the flange.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan and torque the bolts in the proper sequence to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm)
     
    Lower A/C compressor bolt and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
     
    Right hand engine mount
     

  4.  
  5. Remove the engine support fixture.

    Oil dipstick tube
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  8.  
  9. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil dipstick tube.
  8.  
  9. Install an engine support fixture.
  10.  
  11. Remove the Right hand engine mount and raise the engine 3 inches using the support tool.
  12.  
  13. Remove the lower A/C compressor bolt.
  14.  
  15. Remove the oil pan bolts.
  16.  
  17. Using a flat blade tool, pry the oil pan from the engine block.

To install:

  1. Apply a 0.08 in. (2mm) bead of RTV sealer to the pan flange. Be sure the RTV is applied to the inner side of the flange.

  3. Install the oil pan and torque the bolts in the proper sequence to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the lower A/C compressor bolt and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the right hand engine mount.
  8.  
  9. Remove the engine support fixture.
  10.  
  11. Install the oil dipstick tube.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  
  15. Fill the engine with the proper amount of clean oil.
  16.  
  17. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.

2.4L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Remove the oil level indicator tube.
    NOTE
    The support fixture bar must be installed to provide enough access to remove and properly tighten the oil pan bolts.

  6.  
  7. Install the engine support fixture.
  8.  
  9. Remove engine mount.
  10.  
  11. Using the engine support fixture, raise the engine approximately 3 inches.
  12.  
  13. Raise and support the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Loosen the upper Air Conditioning (A/C) compressor bolts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the lower A/C compressor bolt.
  18.  
  19. Place a suitable drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
  20.  
  21. Remove the oil pan drain plug.
  22.  
  23. Drain the engine oil.
  24.  
  25. Reinstall the oil pan drain plug until snug.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector from the alternator control module coolant pump.
  28.  
  29. Remove the alternator control module coolant pump bolt.
  30.  
  31. Remove the alternator control module coolant pump from the oil pan.
  32.  
  33. Remove the 4 oil pan to transaxle bolts.
  34.  
  35. Remove the oil pan bolts.
  36.  
  37. Remove the oil pan
  38.  
  39. Remove any old oil pan sealant.
  40.  

To install:

  1. Ensure that the oil pan and the sealing surface on the lower crankcase are free of all oil and debris. Apply a 2mm bead of sealant around the perimeter of the oil pan and the oil suction port opening. DO NOT over apply the sealant. More than a 2mm bead is not required.
  2.  
  3. Install the oil pan.
  4.  
  5. Install the oil pan bolts and hand tighten.
  6.  
  7. Install the 4 oil pan to transaxle bolts. Tighten the bolts to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Tighten the oil pan bolts in the sequence shown to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the alternator control module coolant pump to the oil pan. Ensure that the anti-rotation tab is inserted into the hole in the oil pan.
  12.  
  13. Install the alternator control module coolant pump bolt and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connector to the alternator control module coolant pump.
  16.  
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Using the engine support fixture, lower the engine.
  20.  
  21. Install the engine mount.
  22.  
  23. Remove the engine support fixture.
  24.  
  25. Install the oil level indicator tube.
  26.  
  27. Install the accessory drive belt.
  28.  
  29. Fill the engine oil to the proper level.

3.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Separate the oil pan from the engine with an RTV cutter tool. Drive the tool around the pan to shear the RTV seam, then tap the pan sideways with a rubber mallet to loosen.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Nose cone bracket bolts from the oil pan
     
    Lower transmission flange-to-oil pan bolts
     
    Oil pan bolts

NOTE
The alignment of the oil pan is critical in ensuring transaxle flange-to-oil pane sealing. You must apply the proper amount of RTV to ensure a positive seal of the chamfered edge. Once the pan ahs been placed on the bloc, do not allow the pan to move as this will not allow the sealant to properly seal the chamfered edge

  1. Apply a 0.08 in. (2mm) bead of RTV sealer to the pan flange. Be sure the RTV is applied to the inner side of the flange.
  2.  
  3. Install oil pan alignment pins J44715 into the Datum holes shown in the accompanying illustration.

  5. Apply Loctite®242 to the oil pan bolts prior to installation.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan and finger tighten all bolts, and remove the alignment pins, then torque the oil pan bolts to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm) and the transaxle-to-oil pan bolts to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm)

  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  
  11. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  12.  
  13. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
  14.  

3.5L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear engine cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cross-under exhaust pipe brace and pipe.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil pan bolts and pan.
  10.  
  11. Clean the pan mating surfaces.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Apply sealant GM P/N 12346240 evenly to the oil pan mating surface of the engine block.
  2.  
  3. Install the oil pan to the engine. Tighten the bolts in two passes. First pass to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm) and the second pass to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the rear engine cover.
  6.  
  7. Install the cross-under exhaust pipe brace and pipe.
  8.  
  9. Refill the engine with the proper type and amount of engine.
  10.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear engine cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cross-under exhaust pipe brace and pipe.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil pan bolts and pan.
  10.  
  11. Clean the pan mating surfaces.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Apply sealant GM P/N 12346240 evenly to the oil pan mating surface of the engine block.
  2.  
  3. Install the oil pan to the engine. Tighten the bolts in two passes:
    1. First pass to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Second pass to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
    4.

  5. Install the rear engine cover.
  6.  
  7. Install the cross-under exhaust pipe brace and pipe.
  8.  
  9. Refill the engine with the proper type and amount of engine oil.
  10.
