Oil Pressure Sensor

Removal & Installation



2.2L Engine
  1. Turn ignition OFF .
  2.  
  3. Disconnect Engine Oil Pressure (EOP) switch harness connector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the EOP switch using the J 35749 Oil Pressure Socket or equivalent.

To install:

  1. Apply RTV sealant (or equivalent) to the EOP switch threads.
  2.  
  3. Install the EOP switch.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the engine oil pressure switch to 16 ft. lbs. (22Nm)
  6.  
  7. Connect the EOP switch harness connector. Push in the connector until a click is heard, then pull back to confirm a positive engagement.
  8.  
  9. Check the oil level and fill if low.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  12.

  1. Turn ignition OFF .

To install:

  1. Apply RTV sealant (or equivalent) to the EOP switch threads.

  3. Install the EOP switch.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the engine oil pressure switch to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)

  7. Connect the EOP switch harness connector. Push in the connector until a click is heard, then pull back to confirm a positive engagement.

  9. Check the oil level and fill if low.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine and check for leaks.

2.4L Engine

Before servicing any vehicle, please be sure to read the precautions section, which deals with personal safety, prevention of component damage, and important points to take into consideration when servicing a motor vehicle.

  1. Remove the starter.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector from the oil pressure sensor.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine oil pressure sensor.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install the engine oil pressure sensor and tighten to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connector to the oil pressure sensor.
  4.  
  5. Install the starter.

3.5L Engine
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the oil pressure sensor connector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the oil pressure sensor (1).

To install:

  1. Apply sealant .
  2.  
  3. Install the oil pressure sensor (1). Tighten the sensor to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm)
  4.  
  5. Connect the oil pressure sensor connector.
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the oil pressure sensor connector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the oil pressure sensor (1).

To install:

  1. Apply sealant.
  2.  
  3. Install the oil pressure sensor (1). Tighten the sensor to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the oil pressure sensor connector.
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  

Testing



Before servicing any vehicle, please be sure to read the precautions section, which deals with personal safety, prevention of component damage, and important points to take into consideration when servicing a motor vehicle.


NOTE
A J 44953 Oil Pressure Fitting tool or equivalent will be needed

  1. With the vehicle on a level surface, allow adequate drain down time of 2-3 minutes and measure for a low oil level. Add the recommended grade engine oil and fill the crankcase until the oil level measures full on the oil level indicator.
  2.  
  3. Run the engine, and verify low, or no oil pressure on the vehicle gage or light. Listen for a noisy valve train or a knocking noise.
  4.  
  5. Inspect for the following:

    Oil diluted by moisture or unburned fuel mixtures
     
    Improper oil viscosity for the expected temperature
     
    Incorrect or malfunctioning oil pressure sender
     
    Incorrect or malfunctioning oil pressure gauge
     
    Plugged oil filter
     
    Malfunctioning oil bypass valve
     

  6.  
  7. Remove the oil pressure sender or another engine block oil gallery plug.
  8.  
  9. Install J 44953 Oil Pressure Fitting tool or equivalent and an oil pressure gauge and measure the engine oil pressure.
  10.  
  11. Compare the readings to specifications.
  12.  
  13. If the engine oil pressure is below specifications, inspect the engine for one or more of the following:

    Oil pump worn or dirty
     
    Oil pump-to-engine front cover bolts loose
     
    Oil pump screen loose, plugged, or damaged
     
    Oil pump screen O-ring seal missing or damaged
     
    Malfunctioning oil pump pressure regulator valve
     
    Excessive bearing clearance
     
    Cracked, porous, or restricted oil galleries
     
    Oil gallery plugs missing or incorrectly installed
     
    Broken lash adjusters

  15. Higher than recommended oil pressure may be caused by one or more of the following conditions:

    Worn or sticking oil pump pressure relief valve
     
    Plugged oil filter
     
    Improper viscosity oil

3.0L Engine

Before servicing any vehicle, please be sure to read the precautions section, which deals with personal safety, prevention of component damage, and important points to take into consideration when servicing a motor vehicle.


NOTE
SAE 5W-30 is best for your vehicle. However, you can use SAE 10W-30 if its going to be -7°C (+20°F) or above. These numbers on an oil container show its viscosity, or thickness. Do not use engine oil with a viscosity rating such as 10W-40, SAE 20W-50 and W30 as it does not meet Saturn recommended requirements.


NOTE
Engine additives should not be added to your engine oil.

  1. Use SAE 5W30 engine oil when servicing the vehicle.
    WARNING
    The oil level should be 4.76 mm (3/16 in) above or below the FULL line on the dipstick, after the engines oil and filter have been changed. If the oil level is at or below the ADD line, check for oil leaks and add oil up to the FULL line.

  3. Check the engine oil level.
    WARNING
    The cylinder block oil pressure sensor and plug threaded hole is not pipe threads. Use only the adapter provided in the SA 9127E gage bar kit or a M14x 1.5g threaded fitting and seal.

  5. Remove the oil pressure switch.
  6.  
  7. Install the oil pressure gauge, using the SA 9127E gauge bar set.
  8.  
  9. Start the engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature.
  10.  
  11. Check the oil pressure.
  12.  
  13. Oil Pressure at Idle as follows:
    1. Standard: 13.0 psi (90 kPa)
    2.  
    3. Service limit: 9.0 psi (65 kPa).
    4.

  15. Oil Pressure at 2000 RPM as follows:
    1. Standard: 36.0 psi (250 kPa).
    2.  
    3. Service Limit: 29 psi (200 kPa).
    4.

  17. Cold-up to 2500 RPM as follows:
    1. Standard: 80 psi (560 kPa).
      NOTE
      Check for oil leakage after installing the oil pressure switch.

  19. Remove the gauge set.
  20.  
  21. Install the oil pressure switch.
  22.  
  23. Tighten the oil pressure switch to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).

3.5L Engine

Before servicing any vehicle, please be sure to read the precautions section, which deals with personal safety, prevention of component damage, and important points to take into consideration when servicing a motor vehicle.


NOTE
Check and fill the engine oil to the proper level prior to performing the testing procedure.

  1. Connect a tachometer or a scan tool.

  3. Remove the engine oil pressure switch and install the EN 46333 Oil Pressure Testing Gauge (1), flexible hose (2) and the SA9127E Gauge Bar Set (3).
    NOTE
    Shut the engine off immediately if the gauge measures no oil pressure. Repair the condition before continuing. If the oil pressure is not within specifications, inspect the oil pump.

  5. Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Measure the engine oil pressure.
  6.  
  7. Specification

    Engine oil temperature: 176°F (80°C)
     
    Engine oil pressure - at idle speed: 10 psi (70 kPa) minimum
     
    Engine oil pressure - at 3,000 RPM: 71 psi (490 kPa)

  9. Low or no oil pressure may be caused by one or more of the following conditions:

    Low engine oil level
     
    Dirty or improper viscosity oil
     
    Faulty oil pump
     
    Worn or sticking oil pump pressure relief valve
     
    Loose or damaged oil pump screen or cut O-ring seal
     
    Excessive main or connecting rod bearing clearance
     

  10.  
  11. Higher than recommended oil pressure may be caused by one or more of the following conditions:

    Worn or sticking oil pump pressure relief valve
     
    Plugged oil filter
     
    Improper viscosity oil
