Inspection



  1. With the timing chain front cover and the oil pump body cover removed, use a feeler gauge to measure the clearance between the driven rotor and pump body. Clearance should not exceed 0.011 in. (0.277mm).
  2.  
  3. Use a feeler gauge to measure the clearance between the both rotor tips. Clearance should not exceed 0.006 in. (0.150mm).
  4.  
  5. Using Plastigage®or a feeler gauge, temporarily install the pump cover and measure the rotor-to-cover clearance. Clearance should not exceed 0.005 in. (0.128mm).
  6.  
  7. If necessary, replace the pump components and/or the front cover assembly.

Overhaul



2.2L Engine
  1. Inspect and measure the body clearance between the driven rotor and the pump body using SA91101NE Feeler Gauge Set or equivalent.
    1. Driven Rotor-to-Pump Body Side Clearance Standard 0.006-0.011 inch (0.150-0.277mm) - Service limit 0.277 mm (0.011 in).

  3. If the clearance is greater than the service limit, replace the oil pump assembly

  5. Inspect the tip clearance:
    1. Using SA91101NE or equivalent, measure the clearance between both rotor tips- Rotor Tip Clearance Service limit 0.006 in (0.150mm).

  7. If the clearance is greater than the service limit, replace the oil pump assembly
  8.  
  9. Inspect the end-to-end clearance
    1. Using SA91101NE or equivalent, measure the clearance between the side of the drive and driven rotors and the oil pump cover plate.
    2.  
    3. Rotor-to-Cover Side Clearance Standard 0.0016-0.0049 in (0.040--0.125mm) - Service limit 0.003 in (0.08mm).

  11. If the clearance is greater than the service limit, replace the oil pump assembly.

3.0L Engine
  1. Inspect the body clearance as follows:
    1. Using SA91101NE Feeler Gauge Set or equivalent, measure the clearance between the driven rotor and pump body.
    2.  
    3. Body to Side Clearance - Service Limit 0.011 inch (0.277mm). maximum.
    4.  
    5. If the clearance is greater than the maximum, replace the oil pump assembly.

  3. Inspect the tip clearance: Using SA91101NE or equivalent, measure the clearance between both rotor tips.

  5. Inspect the inner end outer gear-to-housing clearance: Using SA91101NE or equivalent or Plastigage®or equivalent and a straight edge, measure the oil pump inner and outer gear to housing clearance:
    1. Inner Gear-to-Housing Clearance - Service limit 0.003 inch (0.08mm) maximum.
    2.  
    3. Outer Gear-to-Housing Clearance - Service limit 0.004 inch (0.10mm) maximum.

  7. Inspect the oil pressure regulating valve, oil pressure relief valve and springs for wear and damage.
  8.  
  9. Check the oil pump pressure regulating valve and oil pressure relief valve for free movement in bores.
  10.  
  11. Replace if worn, damaged or if the valves do not move freely in the bores.

3.5L Engine
  1. Inspect the water pump (300) for the following conditions:
    1. Gasket sealing surfaces for excessive scratches or gouging
    2.  
    3. Restrictions within the coolant passages
    4.  
    5. Excessive side-to-side play in the pulley shaft
    6.  
    7. A loose belt pulley or a pulley with excessive wear in the belt tracking area
    8.  
    9. Leakage at the vent hole A stain around the vent hole is acceptable. If leakage occurs, such as dripping with the engine running or the cooling system pressurized, replace the water pump.

Removal & Installation



2.2L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Air cleaner assembly
     
    Right front wheel and splash shield
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Crankshaft damper pulley
     
    Belt tensioner
     

  6.  
  7. Install an engine support fixture.

    Right front engine mount
     
    Front cover bolts and the 13mm bolt under the water pump
     
    Front cover
     
    Oil pump cover plate
     
    Drive rotor and driven rotor
     
    Pressure relief valve

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Whenever the oil pump is installed, the assembly must be packed with petroleum jelly in order to prime the pump.



    New relief valve into the cover bore, if removed. Coat the valve with clean engine oil and tap it into the bore. Torque the plug to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
     



    Drive and driven rotors into the pump with the chamfer toward the front oil seal
     
    Oil pump body cover using new bolts and torque the bolts to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm)
     
    Front cover with a new oil seal and torque the perimeter and center bolts to 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) and the lower center bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Right side engine mount and torque the bolts to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm)
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the engine support fixture.

    Drive belt tensioner and torque the bolts 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    Crankshaft damper pulley and torque the bolt to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) plus 75 degrees
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Right front splash shield and wheel
     
    Air cleaner assembly
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Fill the engine with clean oil and replace the oil filter.
  6.  
  7. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    The negative battery cable
     
    The air cleaner assembly
     
    The right front wheel and splash shield
     
    The accessory drive belt
     
    The crankshaft damper pulley
     
    The belt tensioner
     

  6.  
  7. Install an engine support fixture.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    The right front engine mount
     
    The front cover bolts and the 13mm bolt under the water pump
     
    The front cover
     
    The oil pump cover plate
     
    The drive rotor and driven rotor
     
    The pressure relief valve

To install:


NOTE
Whenever the oil pump is installed, the assembly must be packed with petroleum jelly in order to prime the pump.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    The new relief valve into the cover bore, if removed. Coat the valve with clean engine oil and tap it into the bore. Torque the plug to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
     
    The drive and driven rotors into the pump with the chamfer toward the front oil seal
     
    The oil pump body cover using new bolts and torque the bolts to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm)
     
    The front cover with a new oil seal and torque the perimeter and center bolts to 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) and the lower center bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    The right side engine mount and torque the bolts to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm)
     
    The engine support fixture
     
    The drive belt tensioner and torque the bolts 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    The crankshaft damper pulley and torque the bolt to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) plus 75°
     
    The accessory drive belt
     
    The right front splash shield and wheel
     
    The air cleaner assembly
     
    The negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the engine to the proper level with clean oil and replace the oil filter.
  4.  
  5. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
  6.  

2.4L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drive belt tensioner bracket.
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine front cover bolts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the long water pump bolt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the engine front cover and gaskets.
  12.  
  13. Remove the crankshaft front cover oil seal with an appropriate tool.
  14.  
  15. Remove the oil pump.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Install the oil pump.
  2.  
  3. Install the engine front cover with a new gasket.
  4.  
  5. Install the long water pump bolt and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the engine front cover bolts and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the drive belt tensioner bracket and tighten to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the accessory drive belt tensioner and tighten to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  12.  

3.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Air cleaner assembly
     
    Front timing belt cover
     
    Timing belt
     
    Rear timing belt cover
     
    A/C compressor and power steering pump bracket and move them away from the oil pump housing
     
    Alternator bolts and move the alternator out of the way
     
    Oil pan
     

  8.  
  9. Mount a crank hub holding tool to the crankshaft drive gear and remove the drive gear.

    Oil pump bolts
     
    Oil pan housing bolts that thread into the oil pump
     
    Oil pump
     
    Front main oil seal and collar
     
    Pressure relief valve
     
    Oil pump cover
     
    Drive rotor and driven rotor

  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the new relief valve into the cover bore (if removed) and torque the plug to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
    NOTE
    Whenever the oil pump is installed, the new gasket must be coated with a thin bead of sealing Loctite 518®.

  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Drive and driven rotors into the pump with the chamfer toward the front oil seal
     
    Oil pump body cover using new bolts and torque them to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Drive gear and torque the new bolt to 184 ft. lbs. (250 Nm) plus 45 degrees then an additional 15 degrees
     
    Oil pan and torque the bolts to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm)
     
    Alternator and torque the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
     
    A/C compressor and power steering pump bracket. Torque the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
     
    Rear timing belt cover-Refer to section 4 for the timing belt procedure.
     
    Drive belt idler pulley-Refer to section 4 for the timing belt procedure.
     
    Timing belt
     
    Front cover with a new oil seal
     
    Air cleaner assembly
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Fill the engine with clean oil. An oil filter replacement is also recommended.
  6.  
  7. Fill the cooling system.
  8.  
  9. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.

3.5L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the timing belt.
  4.  
  5. Remove the timing belt idler pulley.
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil flow control module.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil pan.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil pump pickup tube.
  12.  
  13. Remove the oil pump bolts and pump.
  14.  
  15. Clean the oil pump mating surfaces.

To install:

  1. Install new O-rings onto the oil transfer pipe.
  2.  
  3. Install the pipe into the block.
  4.  
  5. Apply sealant GM P/N 12346240 evenly to the block mating surface of the oil pump housing and to the inner threads of the bolt holes.
  6.  
  7. Install the pins.
  8.  
  9. Install a new O-ring.
  10.  
  11. Install the oil pump assembly and tighten the bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install a new O-ring and the oil pump pickup tube. Tighten the tube bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the oil pan.
  16.  
  17. Install the oil flow control module.
  18.  
  19. Install the timing belt idler pulley.
  20.  
  21. Install the timing belt.
  22.
