Timing Belt Cover, Belt & Sprockets

Removal & Installation



3.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Intake air resonator
     
    Right front wheel and splash shield
     
    Water pump and idler bolts, loosen only
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Right engine mount
     
    Water pump pulley
     
    Idler pulley
     
    Electrical harness connectors at the harness channel
     
    Electrical harness channel from the front cover and position aside
     
    Drive belt tensioner
     
    Front timing belt cover
     

  4.  
  5. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise to 60 degrees Before Top Dead Center (BTDC) using crank hub Torx®socket J42098.
  6.  
  7. Install crankshaft locking tool J42069-10.
  8.  
  9. Rotate the crankshaft in a clockwise direction using tool J42098 until the number one cylinder is at Top dead center (TDC) and tighten the lever arm to the water pump pulley flange.
    NOTE
    Make sure the alignment of the crankshaft is not 180 degrees off. The alignment mark must align with the corresponding marks on the rear timing belt cover.

  11. Install 1-2 and 3-4 camshaft locks, timing belt alignment kit J42069-01 and J42069-2.
    CAUTION
    Do not rotate the crankshaft unless crankshaft is at 60 degrees BTDC or the valve could hit the crankshaft.

  12.  
  13. Loosen the timing belt tensioner and idler pulleys.
  14.  
  15. Remove the timing belt.

To install:

  1. Position the crank at 60 degrees BTDC.
  2.  
  3. Install the lower idler pulley and tighten the bolt to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the upper idle pulley and hand tighten the bolt.
  6.  
  7. Install the timing belt tensioner and hand tighten the nut.
  8.  
  9. With the camshaft locks installed use the green test belt from the alignment kit J42069 to make sure the distance between the camshaft sprockets.
  10.  
  11. Start at the number 1 and 2 sprockets, route the belt over the sprockets while aligning the belt marks to marks on the sprocket and rear cover.
  12.  
  13. Install the belt around the tensioner and upper idler pulley.
  14.  
  15. Route the belt over the 3 and 4 sprockets while aligning the belt marks to marks on the sprocket and rear cover.
  16.  
  17. Install the belt around the crankshaft hub sprockets while aligning marks on the belt to marks on the sprocket.
  18.  
  19. Install wedge tool J42069-30 to lock the belt onto the crankshaft hub sprocket.
  20.  
  21. Carefully rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise to get belt slack on the lower idler pulley, then route the belt around the lower idler pulley and remove the wedge tool.
  22.  
  23. Install the crankshaft locking tool and tighten the lever arm to the water pump pulley flange.
  24.  
  25. Install camshaft checking gauge to cams 3 and 4 and make sure the alignment marks are within 2mm of each other. Install 3 and 4 camshaft lock if properly aligned, then install checking gauge on cams 1 and 2. Rotate the number 1 camshaft sprocket counterclockwise to remove slack between all the cam sprockets.

  27. Make sure the camshaft timing marks are to the left (retard) side of the checking gauge as follows:
    1. Rotate the upper idler pulley counterclockwise until marks are properly aligned within 2mm of each other and install cam lock 1 and 2.

Install 3 and 4 camshaft lock if properly aligned, then install checking gauge on cams 1 and 2. Rotate the number 1 camshaft sprocket counterclockwise to remove slack between all the cam sprockets -3.0L (VIN B) engines

  29. Tighten the upper idler pulley bolt to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).

  31. Adjust the belt tensioner so that the center alignment mark is about 1 / 8 inch (3mm) above the mark on the spring loader.

  33. Remove 1 and 2, 3 and 4 camshaft locks, belt alignment kit J42069-1 and J42069-2 and camshaft locking tool J42069-10.
    NOTE
    If TDC is passed, do not rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise. this will not allow proper slack to be taken up between the belt tensioner and crank sprocket. To correct, rotate the crank an additional 2 turns.

  35. Rotate the crankshaft 1 3 / 4 turns clockwise and install crankshaft locking tool J42069-10 and stop at TDC. Tighten the lever arm to the water pump pulley flange.
  36.  
  37. Install gauge J42069-20 and verify the marks are within 2mm.

  39. Adjust the belt tensioner so that the center alignment mark is about 1 / 8 inch (3mm) above the mark on the spring loaded idler.
  40.  
  41. Tighten the belt tensioner nut to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  42.  
  43. Remove the crankshaft locking tool.
  44.  
  45. Install or connect the following:

    Front timing belt cover. Torque the bolts to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    Drive belt tensioner. Torque the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
     
    Idler pulley and snug the bolt.
     
    Electrical harness.
     
    Water pump pulley
     
    Accessory drive belt
     

  46.  
  47. Tighten the water pump pulley bolts to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm0 and the idler puller bolt to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).

    Engine mount bracket and tighten the bolt to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm)
     
    Engine mount-to-frame rail and engine mount bracket, tighten the fasteners to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)

  49. Remove the engine support.

    Splash shield
     
    Wheel
     
    Intake air resonator
     
    Negative battery cable

3.5L Engine

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has to perform the crankshaft position learn process under the following conditions:

  1. The Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor is removed for replacement or during disassembly.
  2.  
  3. The timing belt is removed for replacement or during disassembly.
  4.  
  5. The CKP Pattern Clear is executed from the Tech II.
  6.  
  7. The PCM is replaced
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Remove the right splash shield.
  6.  
  7. Remove the crankshaft balancer using balancer holding tool EN 46337.
  8.  
  9. Remove the timing belt cover bolts and the cover.
  10.  
  11. Use timing belt tensioner pulley retaining bolt tool EN 36331 to retain the tensioner pulley.
  12.  
  13. Loosen the idler pulley bolt about 5 or 6 turns.
  14.  
  15. Remove the timing belt from the pulleys.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Clean the belt pulleys and covers.
  2.  
  3. Rotate the crankshaft and align the Top Dead Center (TDC) mark (2) on the sprocket (237) with the pointer on the oil pump housing (1). Refer to the illustration for location.

  5. Rotate the left camshaft sprocket to TDC by aligning the mark (2) on the sprocket with the pointer (1) on the cover.

  7. Rotate the right camshaft sprocket to TDC by aligning the mark (2) on the sprocket with the pointer (1) on the cover.

  9. Install the timing belt tensioner pulley retaining bolt tool EN 36331. Screw the tool all the way in by hand, until the tool contacts the timing belt tensioner.

  11. Install the belt onto the sprockets. Install the timing belt in a clockwise sequence starting with the tensioner pulley in the sequence illustrated..

  13. Tighten the idler pulley bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Remove the tools.
  16.  
  17. Install the guide (236), balancer (228), and bolt (227) and tighten the bolt until snug.

  19. Using the balancer holding tool EN 46337 rotate the crankshaft clockwise about 5 or 6 complete revolutions to position the timing belt on the sprockets.
  20.  
  21. Align the mark (2) on the sprocket with the pointer (1) on the oil pump housing.

  23. Inspect the left camshaft sprocket for proper alignment. The TDC mark (2) on the sprocket should align with the pointer (1) on the cover.

  25. Inspect the right camshaft sprocket for proper alignment. The TDC mark (2) on the sprocket should align with the pointer (1) on the cover.

  27. Remove the balancer.
  28.  
  29. Install the timing belt cover and tighten the bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Install the balancer.
  32.  
  33. Install the splash shield.
  34.  
  35. Install the engine drive belt.
