Lower Control Arms

Bushing Replacement



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Control arm
     

  4.  
  5. Front bushing by using bearing removal/installer tools J44971 to press out the bushing.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:


  2.  
  3. Press in the new control arm bushing using bearing removal/installer tools J44971.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Ball stud bolt
     
    Separate the ball stud from the steering knuckle by using ball joint removal tool J43828
     
    Lower control arm-to-frame retainers
     
    Lower control arm

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Control arm to the frame and torque the rear bolts and nuts to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm) and the front arm-to-frame bolt and nut to 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm) on 2002-04 models or 148 ft. lbs. (200 Nm) on 2005 models
     
    Ball stud to steering knuckle and torque the bolt to 89 inch. lbs. (10 Nm) plus 150 degrees on 2002-04 models. On 2005 models, if the bottom of the ball stud has a cup and is silver, tighten the nut to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm). of if the bottom of the ball stud is flat and black, tighten the nut to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
     
    Wheel
     
    Check and adjust the alignment, if necessary.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ball stud bolt.
  6.  
  7. Separate the ball stud from the steering knuckle by using ball joint removal tool J43828.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower control arm-to-frame retainers.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lower control arm.

To install:

  1. Install the control arm to the frame and torque the rear bolts and nuts to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm) and the front arm-to-frame bolt and nut to 148 ft. lbs. (200 Nm)
    WARNING
    There are 2 different ball studs used on this vehicle. The ball stud type must be identified in order to use the correct torque value when tightening the ball stud nut. If the wrong torque is used, damage could occur to the ball stud.

  3. If the bottom of the ball stud has a cup and is silver, tighten the nut to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
  4.  
  5. If the bottom of the ball stud is flat and black, tighten the nut to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the wheels. Tighten the wheel lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Check and adjust the alignment, if necessary.
