Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disable the air bag system.
  4.  
  5. Record all preset radio stations.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  10.  
  11. Recover the A/C system refrigerant using approved equipment.
  12.  
  13. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Suction line from the Thermal Expansion Valve (TXV) and cap the TXV and the line
     
    TXV thermistor connection
     
    Heater core outlet and inlet hose-s from the core and plug the lines
     
    Instrument Panel (IP) right end panel by gently tugging to disengage the clip
     
    IP knee bolster panel
     
    IP left end panel by gently tugging to disengage the clip
     
    Door jamb switch electrical connections on both sides

  15. Place the shifter in neutral.

    Horse shoe bezel at the shifter by first pulling up at the rear to disengage the clips and slide it up and over the shifter to access the electrical connections. Disengage all electrical connections.
     
    Glove box-to-IP screws and upper glove box-to-radio bezel screws
     
    Glove box
     
    Radio bezel by pulling the lower edge forward first and then the top to disengage the clips
     
    Temperature cable, blower switch and IP 20-way connections from the controller
     
    Air bag telltale, foglamp switch, dimmer switch and hazard switch connections
     
    Upper and lower steering column shrouds
     
    Cluster bezel screws and the bezel
     
    A-pillar garnish moldings
     
    Right IP deflector assembly-to-intermediate duct screw
     
    IP cover-to-cross car beam bolt covers and the cover-to-beam bolts
     
    IP cover-to-IP retaining screws at the lower edge of the cover and the radio opening
     
    IP cover by lifting it then moving it rearwards passenger side first and walk the cluster opening around the steering wheel and out the drivers side door
     
    Cluster-to-IP screws and the cluster
     
    Radio
     
    Passenger side air bag
     
    Center, right and left shifter closeout panels
     
    Right and left intermediate ducts
     
    Cluster connector from the retainer
     
    IP fuse block from the bracket
     
    IP ground wire from the H brace
     
    Brake Control Module (BCM) from the retainer
     
    Data Link Controller (DLC) from the retainer
     
    Right door sill plate trim
     
    IP retainer fasteners and retainer
     
    Heater duct
     
    Heater core cover
     
    Heater core pipe cover and pipe foam seal

  17. Grab the heater core at the end tanks and remove the core. If the core sticks, spray the perimeter of the core seal and the pips at the front of the dash with soapy water can aid in removal.

To install:

  1. Spray the dash seal at the core pipe openings and seal with soapy water to aid in installation.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Heater core
     
    Pipe seal and cover. Tighten the cover retainers to 9 inch lbs. (1 Nm).
     
    Heater core cover and tighten the cover retainers to 9 inch lbs. (1 Nm)
     
    Heater duct
     
    IP retainer by aligning the 4-way locator (tapered boss) and outboard locators with the corresponding holes or slots in the beam, then tighten the fasteners starting from the center to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Right door sill plate trim
     
    DLC to the retainer
     
    BCM to the retainer
     
    IP ground wire to the H brace
     
    IP fuse block to the bracket
     
    Cluster connector to the retainer
     
    Right and left intermediate ducts
     
    Center, right and left shifter closeout panels
     
    Passenger side air bag and tighten the fasteners to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Radio
     
    Cluster and tighten the screws
     
    IP top cover and tighten the retainers to 22 inch lbs. (2.5 Nm)
     
    IP top cover-to-beam bolts and tighten to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    IP top cover bolt covers
     
    Right IP deflector assembly-to-intermediate duct screw
     
    A-pillar garnish moldings
     
    Cluster bezel and screws
     
    Upper and lower steering column shrouds
     

  4.  
  5. Center the temperature knob by aligning the controller housing alignment tab with the slot in the shaft.
  6.  
  7. Align the air temperature cable lug with the detent spring point.

    Temperature cable to the control head by aligning the retention tabs and the knob shaft and snap into place
     
    IP harness to the blower switch and controller
     
    Air bag telltale, foglamp switch, dimmer switch and hazard switch connections
     
    Radio bezel
     
    Glove box
     

  8.  
  9. Place the shifter in neutral.

    Horse shoe bezel electrical connections
     
    Horse shoe bezel and place the shifter in park
     
    Door jamb switch electrical connections on both sides
     
    IP left end panel
     
    IP knee bolster panel
     
    IP right end panel
     
    Heater core outlet and inlet hose-s to the core and position the clamp at 9 o-clock
     
    TXV thermistor connection
     
    Suction line to the TXV using new seal washer and tighten to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm) and cap the TXV and the line
     

  10.  
  11. Recharge the A/C system refrigerant using approved equipment.
  12.  
  13. Refill the engine cooling system.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.  
  17. Reset all preset radio stations.
  18.  
  19. Enable the air bag system.
  20.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Air Bag (Supplemental Restraint System), disarming the system.
  4.  
  5. Record all preset radio stations.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  10.  
  11. Recover the A/C system refrigerant using approved equipment.
  12.  
  13. Remove or disconnect the following:

    The suction line from the Thermal Expansion Valve (TXV) and cap the TXV and the line
     
    The TXV thermistor connection

    The heater core outlet and inlet hoses from the core and plug the lines
     
    The Instrument Panel (IP) right end panel by gently tugging to disengage the clip

    The door jamb switch electrical connections on both sides

  15. Place the shifter in neutral.

  17. Remove or disconnect the following:

    The heater core pipe cover and pipe foam seal

  19. Grab the heater core at the end tanks and remove the core. If the core sticks, spray the perimeter of the core seal and the pipes at the front of the dash with soapy water to aid in removal.

To install:

  1. Spray the dash seal at the core pipe openings with soapy water to aid in installation.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    The heater core
     
    The pipe seal and cover. Tighten the cover retainers to 9 inch lbs. (1 Nm)
     
    The heater core cover and tighten the cover retainers to 9 inch lbs. (1 Nm)
     
    The heater duct
     
    The IP retainer by aligning the 4-way locator (tapered boss) and outboard locators with the corresponding holes or slots in the beam, then tighten the fasteners starting from the center to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    The right door sill plate trim
     
    The DLC to the retainer
     
    The BCM to the retainer
     
    The IP ground wire to the H brace
     
    The IP fuse block to the bracket
     
    The cluster connector to the retainer
     
    The right and left intermediate ducts
     
    The center, right, and left shifter closeout panels
     
    The passenger side air bag and tighten the fasteners to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    The radio
     
    The cluster and tighten the screws
     
    The IP top cover and tighten the retainers to 22 inch lbs. (3 Nm)
     
    The IP top cover-to-beam bolts and tighten to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    The IP top cover bolt covers
     
    The right IP deflector assembly-to-intermediate duct screw
     
    The A-pillar garnish moldings
     
    The cluster bezel and screws
     
    The upper and lower steering column shrouds
     

  4.  
  5. Center the temperature knob by aligning the controller housing alignment tab with the slot in the shaft.

    The temperature cable to the control head by aligning the retention tabs and the knob shaft and snap into place
     
    The IP harness to the blower switch and controller
     
    The air bag telltale, foglamp switch, dimmer switch, and hazard switch connections
     
    The radio bezel
     
    The glove box
     

  10.  
  11. Place the shifter in neutral.
  12.  
  13. Install or connect the following:

    The horse shoe bezel electrical connections
     
    The horse shoe bezel and place the shifter in park
     
    The door jamb switch electrical connections on both sides
     
    The IP left end panel
     
    The IP knee bolster panel
     
    The IP right end panel
     
    The heater core outlet and inlet hose-s to the core and position the clamp at 9 o-clock
     
    The TXV thermistor connection
     
    The Suction line to the TXV using new seal washer and tighten to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm) and cap the TXV and the line
     

  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.  
  17. Recharge the A/C system refrigerant using approved equipment.
  18.  
  19. Refill the engine cooling system.
  20.  
  21. Reset all preset radio stations.
  22.  
  23. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Air Bag (Supplemental Restraint System), arming the system.
