Transmission Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transmission fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Both battery cables
     

  6.  
  7. Install an engine support fixture.
  8.  
  9. Fasten the radiator to the upper radiator support.

    Wheels
     
    Splash shields
     
    Ball joints and tie rods from the knuckle
     
    Lower control arm from the knuckle
     
    Lower stabilizer bar links
     
    Steering gear from the steering gear assembly
     
    Rear transaxle mount-to-cradle bolts
     
    Rear transaxle mount bracket-to-transaxle bolts
     
    Front lower mount through bolt from the cradle
     
    Front air deflector from the body but leave it attached to the cradle

  11. Support the cradle with a jack

    Cradle bolts and the cradle
     
    Shift lever cable from the shift control housing using tool J36346
     
    Shift lever cable from the bracket
     
    Pressure line from the clutch actuator by removing the C-clip and pulling it away from the actuator
     
    Back-up lamp switch connector
     
    Front transaxle mount from the transaxle
     
    Right side drive axle from the intermediate drive shaft using removal tool J45341 and slide hammer SA9173G

  13. Secure the drive axle from the intermediate drive shaft.
    NOTE
    Remove the retainer ring from the stub shaft before removing the tool and discard the ring.



    Intermediate drive shaft using removal tool J440177 and axle seal puller SA9133T
     
    Left side drive axle drive shaft using removal tool J45341 and slide hammer SA9173G and secure the axle aside
     
    Top transaxle mount bolts

  15. Use the engine support fixture to lower the transaxle enough so that the assembly can be removed.
  16.  
  17. Attach the transaxle to a suitable transaxle jack.
  18.  
  19. Remove the transaxle bolts on the engine side and the transaxle bolt on the transaxle side.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal, please note the following torque specifications:

    Transaxle-to-engine and engine-to-transaxle bolts: 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm)
     
    Top mount-to-transaxle bolts: 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    Front transaxle mount bolts : 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    Rear transaxle mount-to-transaxle bolts: 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    Cradle-to-body bolts: 2001-03 models to 140 ft. lbs. (190 Nm), or 114 ft. lbs. (155 Nm) on 2004 models
     
    Front transaxle mount through bolt: 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)
     
    Rear transaxle mount through bolt: 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)
     
    Steering gear-to-column bolt: 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm)
     
    Lower control arm nut: 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm) plus 150 degrees
     
    Stabilizer bar link: 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm)
     
    Tie rod end using installer J44015 and tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
     
    Tie rod-to-steering knuckle nut: 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)

  3. Fill the transmission to the proper level.
  4.  
  5. Warm the engine and check the transmission fluid. Check and adjust vehicle alignment, as necessary.
