Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Both front wheels
     
    Tie rods from the steering knuckles
     
    Intermediate shaft from the steering gear pinch bolt and discard the bolt
     
    Shaft from the gear
     
    Stabilizer bar link nuts, links and swing the bar upwards
     
    Shift cable clip from the gear housing, if equipped
     
    Steering gear-to-cradle bolts
     
    Steering gear by sliding it out the right side of the vehicle

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Steering gear through the right wheel opening
     

  2.  
  3. Center the gear mounting bushings into the cradle supports.

    Steering gear-to-mounting bolts and tighten to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)
     
    Shift cable clip to the gear housing, if equipped
     
    Intermediate shaft to the steering gear and torque the new pinch bolt to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm)
     
    Stabilizer bar into position
     
    Stabilizer bar links and nuts, then tighten the nuts to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm)
     
    Tie rods to the steering knuckles using installer tool JJ44015 and tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)

    New tie rod nut and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) on 2002-04 models or 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm) on 2005 models
     
    Front wheels
     
    Negative battery cable

  5. Check the alignment and adjust if necessary.
  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    The negative battery cable
     
    The front wheels
     
    The tie rods from the steering knuckles
     
    The intermediate shaft from the steering gear pinch bolt and discard the bolt
     
    The shaft from the gear
     
    The stabilizer bar link nuts, links and swing the bar upwards
     
    The shift cable clip from the gear housing, if equipped
     
    The steering gear-to-cradle bolts
     
    The steering gear by sliding it out the right side of the vehicle

To install:

  1. Install the steering gear through the right wheel opening.
  2.  
  3. Center the gear mounting bushings into the cradle supports.

  5. Install or connect the following:

    The steering gear-to-mounting bolts and tighten to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)
     
    The shift cable clip to the gear housing, if equipped
     
    The intermediate shaft to the steering gear and torque the new pinch bolt to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm)
     
    The stabilizer bar into position
     
    The stabilizer bar links and nuts, then tighten the nuts to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm)
     
    The tie rods to the steering knuckles using installer tool JJ44015 and tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)

  6.  
  7. Install a new tie rod nut and tighten to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the wheels. Tighten the wheel lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the negative battery cable.
  12.  
  13. Check the alignment and adjust if necessary.
