CV-Joints



Overhaul
Inner Joint
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    The axle shaft from the vehicle
     
    The large CV boot retaining clamp
     
    The small CV boot retaining clamp
     
    The CV boot from the joint
     
    The axle shaft retaining ring
     
    The outer joint from the axle shaft
     
    The CV boot
     

  4.  
  5. Disassemble the chrome alloy balls from the CV-joint cage as follows:
    1. Position a brass drift against the CV-joint cage and tap it with a hammer to tilt the cage.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 1st chrome alloy ball from the cage.
    4.  
    5. Tilt the cage in the opposite direction.
    6.  
    7. Remove the opposite chrome alloy ball.
    8.  
    9. Repeat the procedure until all 6 balls are removed.
    10.

  7. Disassemble the CV-joint cage and inner race as follows:
    1. Pivot the cage and race 90° to the center line of the outer race.
    2.  
    3. Align the cage windows with outer race lands.
    4.  
    5. Remove the cage from the outer race.
    6.  
    7. Rotate the inner race upward and remove it from the cage.
    8.  

  8.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the parts with a light coat of grease.
  2.  
  3. Assemble the CV-joint cage and inner race, as follows:
    1. Rotate the inner race 90° to the cage centerline.
    2.  
    3. Align the cage windows with inner race lands.
    4.  
    5. Insert the inner race into the cage by rotating the inner race downward.
    6.  
    7. Insert the cage/inner race into the outer race.
    8.

  5. Assemble the chrome alloy balls into the CV-joint cage, as follows:
    1. Position a brass drift against the CV-joint cage and tap it with a hammer to tilt the cage.
    2.  
    3. Insert the 1st chrome alloy ball into the cage.
    4.  
    5. Tilt the cage in the opposite direction.
    6.  
    7. Insert the opposite chrome alloy ball.
    8.  
    9. Repeat the procedure until all 6 balls are inserted.
    10.  

  6.  
  7. Install 1 / 2 of the grease provided, into the CV-joint.
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    The small CV boot retaining ring
     
    The CV boot on the halfshaft
     
    The new retaining ring on the halfshaft
     
    The large ring clamp on the CV boot
     
    The outer joint onto the axle shaft
     
    The retaining ring into the outer race
     

  10.  
  11. Install the remaining grease into the CV boot.
  12.  
  13. Position the CV boot and the small boot clamp.
  14.  
  15. Crimp the small boot clamp.
  16.  
  17. Position and crimp the large boot clamp in place.
  18.  
  19. Install the Halfshaft in the vehicle.

Outer Joint
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    The wheel
     
    The halfshaft
     
    The swage ring using a hand grinder
     
    The large CV-joint boot clamp
     
    The CV-joint boot by sliding it away from the tri-pod joint
     
    The tri-pod housing from the tri-pod spider
     
    The inboard spacer ring slide it rearward on the shaft
     
    The outboard retaining ring
     
    The tri-pod joint spider assembly
     
    The inboard spacer ring and CV-joint boot
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install the swage ring clamp on the CV-joint boot.
  2.  
  3. Install the CV-joint boot.
  4.  
  5. Position the CV-joint boot seal into the axle shaft-s joint seal groove and align the swage ring clamp on the boot.
    WARNING
    Make sure that there are no pinch points on the inboard seal.

  6.  
  7. Crimp the swage ring.
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    The inboard spacer ring, slide it rearward on the shaft
     
    The tri-pod joint spider assembly onto the shaft
     
    The outboard retaining ring into the axle shaft groove
     
    The tri-pod joint spider assembly, slide it against the outboard retaining ring
     
    The inboard spacer ring, seat it in the groove
     

  10.  
  11. Pack 1 / 2 of the grease kit into the boot.
  12.  
  13. Pack 1 / 2 of the grease kit into the tri-pod housing.
  14.  
  15. Install the new large seal clamp onto the CV-joint boot.
  16.  
  17. Install the tri-pod housing, slide it over the tri-pod joint spider assembly.
  18.  
  19. Install the CV-joint boot/clamp, slide it into place, over the trilobal tri-pod bushing with the seal lip in the groove.
    NOTE
    Make sure the boot lies flat against the trilobal bushing.

  20.  
  21. Position the CV-joint boot so it measures 4.9 in. (125mm).
  22.  
  23. Using a crimp tool, a torque wrench, and a breaker bar, crimp the large CV-joint boot clamp to 130 ft. lbs. (176 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install the halfshaft and the wheel.
  26.  

Removal & Installation

J 45059 Angle Meter
 

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove and discard the wheel drive shaft spindle nut.
  8.  
  9. While holding the stabilizer link with a wrench, remove the stabilizer link-to-lower control arm nut.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the link from the control arm.
  12.  
  13. Place a stand under the lower control arm and support the control arm.
  14.  
  15. Remove the lower shock absorber mounting bolt and nut.
  16.  
  17. Remove the toe link nut, bolt, and washer.
  18.  
  19. Loosen, but do not remove, the lower suspension jounce bumper nut.
  20.  
  21. Remove the lower control arm-to-suspension knuckle bolt and nut.
    CAUTION
    Relieve spring tension slowly in order to avoid sudden release of the coil spring.

  23. Slowly lower support stand until coil spring tension is relieved and remove coil spring.
  24.  
  25. Loosen, but do not remove, the upper control arm-to-suspension knuckle nut.
    WARNING
    Support the wheel drive shaft while it is disengaged from the wheel hub and bearing assembly in order to avoid damaging the wheel drive shaft seals.

  27. Place a block of wood against the wheel drive shaft spindle and tap with a hammer to release the spindle from the wheel hub and bearing assembly.
  28.  
  29. Rotate the suspension knuckle upward and secure with heavy mechanics wire, or equivalent.
  30.  
  31. Assemble the J 45341 and the J-2619-A to the wheel drive shaft inner tripot joint.
  32.  
  33. Disengage the tripot joint from the Rear Drive Module (RDM).
  34.  
  35. Remove the rear wheel drive halfshaft from the vehicle.
  36.  
  37. Remove and discard the wheel drive shaft retaining ring.
  38.  

To install:

  1. Install a new wheel drive shaft retaining ring to the inner tripot joint.
  2.  
  3. Install the J 44394 to the wheel drive shaft oil seal.
  4.  
  5. Align the splines of the inner tripot joint to the output shaft of the RDM.
  6.  
  7. Install the wheel drive shaft to the output shaft:
    1. Guide the wheel drive shaft tripot joint squarely onto the output shaft.
    2.  
    3. After the splined end of the wheel drive shaft passes the oil seal, remove the J 44394 from the oil seal.
    4.  
    5. Firmly engage the wheel drive shaft to the output shaft.
    6.  
    7. Ensure that the tripot joint is fully seated on the output shaft by grasping the tripot joint and attempting to pull free of the output shaft.
    8.  
    9. Ensure that the tripot slinger does not become damaged.
    10.

  9. Rotate the suspension knuckle downward while simultaneously guiding the Constant Velocity (CV) joint spindle to the wheel hub and bearing assembly of the suspension knuckle.
  10.  
  11. Hand install a new wheel drive shaft spindle nut.
  12.  
  13. Position the insulators to the coil spring and align the ends of the coil spring with the abutments of the insulators.
  14.  
  15. Secure each of the insulators to the coil spring using 2 plastic tie straps positioned 180° apart and through the relieves molded into the insulators.
  16.  
  17. Cut off any excess length of the tie straps.
  18.  
  19. Position the coil spring assembly to the lower control arm.
  20.  
  21. Position a support stand under the lower control arm.
  22.  
  23. Carefully raise the lower control arm while simultaneously guiding the coil spring assembly into the rear suspension cradle.
  24.  
  25. Position the suspension knuckle to the lower control arm.
    NOTE
    Ensure that the hex head of the suspension knuckle bolt faces the rear of the vehicle.

  27. Install the lower control arm-to-suspension knuckle bolt and nut. Tighten the bolt and nut to 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm). 15. Tighten the upper control arm-to-suspension knuckle bolt and nut. Tighten the bolt and nut to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Install the lower shock absorber mounting bolt and nut. Tighten the bolt and nut to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Slowly lower and remove the support stand.
  32.  
  33. Tighten the lower jounce bumper nut. Tighten the nut to 47 ft. lbs. (63 Nm).
  34.  
  35. Position the rear toe link to the suspension knuckle.
  36.  
  37. Install the washer, bolt, and nut to the suspension knuckle and the toe link assembly. Tighten the bolt and nut to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
  38.  
  39. Position the stabilizer bar link to the lower control arm.
  40.  
  41. Install the nut to the stabilizer bar link.
  42.  
  43. While holding the stabilizer bar link stationary with a wrench, tighten the nut. Tighten the nut to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
  44.  
  45. Tighten the wheel drive shaft spindle nut. Using the J 45059, tighten the nut to 63 ft. lbs. (86 Nm) plus 36°.
  46.  
  47. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Tighten the wheel lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
  48.  
  49. Lower the vehicle.
  50.
