Lower Control Arms

Bushing Replacement



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Control arm
     
    Rear bushing nut and the bushing

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Bushing and nut. Tighten the nut to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
     
    Control arm
     
    Wheel
     

  2.  

Inner Bushing
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the control arm.
  4.  
  5. Remove the bushing from the arm using removal/installer J45097 in the direction shown in the accompanying illustration as follows:
    1. Place the push out socket against the bushing from the flanged side of the arm.
    2.  
    3. Install the through-bolt with the washer and bearing against the push-out socket.
    4.  
    5. Install a backing socket against the control arm on the opposite side of the flange.
      NOTE
      Apply high pressure lube to the tool threads.

    6.  
    7. Install the flat washer and nut, then tighten the nut to remove the bushing.

To install:

  1. Install the bushing centering it to align with the center of the control arm approximately 0.079 inch (2mm) beyond the flange.
  2.  
  3. Reverse the installer removal tool and press the bearing into the control arm
  4.  
  5. Install the control arm.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Stabilizer link-to-lower control arm nut
     
    Trailing arm bracket-to-underbody bolts
     

  4.  
  5. Support the lower control arm with a suitable jack.

    Lower shock bolt
     
    Jounce jumper nut from the lower control arm
     
    Lower control arm-to-support frame bolt
     
    Lower control arm-to-knuckle retainers
     
    Lower the jack supporting the control arm slowly to unload the spring
     
    Lower control arm-to-knuckle retainers
     
    Spring
     
    Lower control arm-to-support nut and bolt
     

  6.  

To install:



Lower control arm-to-support and hand tighten the nut
 
Spring
 
Jounce jumper and hand tighten the nut
 
Lower control arm into position using the jack
 
Lower control arm-to-knuckle fasteners and hand tighten making sure the bolt heads face the rear of the vehicle. Tighten the bolts to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
 
Lower control arm-to-support bolt to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)
 
Shock absorber lower bolt and tighten to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm) on 2002-04 models or 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm) on 2005 models
 
Jounce jumper nut to 46 ft. lbs. (63 Nm)
 
Stabilizer bar link nut and tighten to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm)
 

  1. When installing the training arm, push upward and install the front bolt, then use a drift to align the rear holes and install the bolts. Tighten the bolts to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
