Transmission Removal & Installation

5at Transmission



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  6.  
  7. Secure the cooling module to the upper body structure.
  8.  
  9. Remove the battery and battery tray.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the transmission shiftier cable.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the wiring harness from the underhood junction block.
  14.  
  15. Evacuate the A/C system.
  16.  
  17. Drain the cooling system.
  18.  
  19. Remove the powertrain control module (PCM).
  20.  
  21. Remove the A/C low pressure tube at the front lift bracket.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the alternator positive cable.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the A/C high pressure switch harness.
  26.  
  27. Remove the A/C tube from the A/C compressor.
  28.  
  29. Disconnect the A/C line from the condenser to the compressor.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect the coolant reservoir hose from the engine.
  32.  
  33. Disconnect the radiator hoses from the engine.
  34.  
  35. Remove the heater hoses.
  36.  
  37. Remove the starter positive cable.
  38.  
  39. Relieve the fuel pressure.
  40.  
  41. Disconnect the fuel feed line.
  42.  
  43. Disconnect the fuel EVAP line.
  44.  
  45. Remove the lower transmission-to-engine bolts.
  46.  
  47. Remove the Power Take-off Unit (PTU) as follows:
    1. Remove the propeller shaft.
    2.  
    3. Drain the transfer case oil.
    4.  
    5. Remove the exhaust cross-under pipe.
    6.  
    7. Remove the vent tube clamp.
    8.  
    9. Remove the vent tube from the transfer case.
    10.  
    11. Remove the transfer case.
      NOTE
      When removing the transfer case/output shaft, do not use excessive force or damage to the bushings may occur.

    12.  
    13. Remove the transfer case from the transmission.
    14.

  49. Remove the torque converter inspection cover.
  50.  
  51. Remove the torque converter to flywheel bolts.
  52.  
  53. Remove the front wheels.
  54.  
  55. Remove the left inner liner.
  56.  
  57. Disconnect the transmission cooler lines from the transmission and bracket.
  58.  
  59. Remove the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles.
  60.  
  61. Remove the stabilizer bar links.
  62.  
  63. Disconnect lower ball joints.
  64.  
  65. Remove the axle shaft nuts.
    NOTE
    In order to prevent possible SIR system deployment, do not attempt to rotate the steering shaft.

  67. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the steering gear.
  68.  
  69. Remove the front exhaust pipe.
  70.  
  71. Remove the three front fender push-pins to allow the front fender to flex.
  72.  
  73. Matchmark the frame to the body position.
  74.  
  75. Support the engine in the cradle with wood blocks.
  76.  
  77. Disconnect the front engine mount from the body.
  78.  
  79. Lower the vehicle to 3 feet off the ground in order to position the Engine Support Table J 39580 under the frame.
  80.  
  81. Remove the cradle bolts.
  82.  
  83. Slowly lower the table to the floor.
  84.  
  85. Remove the starter.
  86.  
  87. Remove the following components:
    1. The transmission shift cable bracket.
    2.  
    3. The Park/Neutral position switch.
    4.  
    5. The transmission vent hose.
    6.  
    7. The transmission mount from the transmission.
    8.  
    9. The rear transmission mount bracket.
    10.

  89. Separate the transmission from the engine.
  90.  
  91. Remove the transfer case, if equipped.
  92.  

To install:

  1. Attach the engine to the transmission.
  2.  
  3. Install the rear mount.
  4.  
  5. Install the front engine mount to the engine
  6.  
  7. Install the following components:
    1. The transmission vent hose.
    2.  
    3. The Park/Neutral position switch.
    4.  
    5. The transmission shift cable bracket and bolts. Tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
    6.  
    7. The starter.
    8.  

  8.  
  9. Install the engine and transmission assembly in the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Install the cradle bolts. Tighten the bolts to 114 ft. lbs. (155 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Remove the lift table.
  14.  
  15. Install the front engine mount bolts to the body. Tighten the transmission mount-to-frame bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) and the transmission mount-to-bracket through bolt, while aligning the transmission mount to the bracket to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Remove the wood blocks from the cradle.
  18.  
  19. Install the lower transmission-to-engine bolts and tighten to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the PTU as follows:
    1. Install the transfer case to the transmission and tighten the bolts to 38 ft. lbs. (51 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Install the vent hose and the clamp to the transfer case.
    4.  
    5. Install the exhaust cross-under pipe.
    6.

  23. Remove the transfer case check plug and fill the transfer case with synthetic gear oil.
  24.  
  25. Install the check plug and gasket to the case and tighten to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Install the torque converter-to-flywheel bolts and tighten to 80 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Install the torque converter inspection cover and tighten to 80 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Install the 3 front fender push-pins.
  32.  
  33. Install the front exhaust pipe.
  34.  
  35. Connect the intermediate shaft from the steering gear.
  36.  
  37. Install the propeller shaft.
  38.  
  39. Install the axle shaft nuts.
  40.  
  41. Connect the lower ball joints.
  42.  
  43. Install the stabilizer bar links.
  44.  
  45. Install tie rod ends to the steering knuckles.
  46.  
  47. Connect the transmission cooler lines to the transmission and bracket.
  48.  
  49. Install the left inner liner.
  50.  
  51. Install the front wheels. Tighten the wheel lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
  52.  
  53. Install the fuel EVAP line.
  54.  
  55. Connect the fuel feed line.
  56.  
  57. Connect the starter positive cable.
  58.  
  59. Install the heater hoses.
  60.  
  61. Connect the radiator hoses to the engine.
  62.  
  63. Attach the A/C tube to the A/C compressor.
  64.  
  65. Connect the coolant reservoir hose.
  66.  
  67. Connect the A/C line from the condenser to compressor.
  68.  
  69. Connect the A/C high pressure switch harness.
  70.  
  71. Connect the alternator wiring.
  72.  
  73. Install the A/C lower pressure tube at the front lift bracket.
  74.  
  75. Install the PCM.
  76.  
  77. Connect the radiator hoses to the engine.
  78.  
  79. Fill the cooling system to the proper level.
  80.  
  81. Connect the wiring harness to the underhood junction block.
  82.  
  83. Connect the transmission shifter cable.
  84.  
  85. Remove the cooling module support.
  86.  
  87. Install the battery tray and battery.
  88.  
  89. Install the air cleaner assembly and ducts.
  90.  
  91. Connect the negative battery cable
  92.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transmission fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Both battery cables
     
    The battery and battery tray bracket
     
    The control cable from the Transmission Range Switch using prytool J36346
     
    The control cable from the bracket
     
    The TRS electrical connection
     
    The input and output speed sensor connections
     
    The positive battery cable from the transmission stud
     
    The headlamp fasteners and wire radiator to the core support
     

  6.  
  7. Install an engine support fixture.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Mark the position of the Power take Off (PTO) prior to removal.



    The transmission fluid dipstick tube
     
    The upper left hand transmission mount
     
    The wheels
     
    The splash shields
     
    The front air deflector
     
    The transmission cooler line nut
     
    The transmission cooler lines from the transmission
     



    The drive shaft from the PTO marking alignment locations prior to removal
     
    The lower stabilizer nut from the cradle on both sides
     
    The lower control arm from the knuckle
     
    The ball joints and tie rods from the knuckle
     
    The front pitch restrictor bolts, through bolts and restrictor
     
    The rear restrictor through bolt from the cradle
     

  10.  
  11. Position a support table under the cradle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the cradle bolts and lower the cradle onto the table.
  14.  
  15. Remove the left side drive axle drive shaft using removal tool J45341 and slide hammer SA9173G and secure the axle aside.
    NOTE
    The stub shaft may disengage from the PTO. If this occurs, plug the PTO to avoid fluid loss.

  16.  
  17. Remove or disconnect the following:

    The right side drive axle from the PTO using removal tool J45341 and slide hammer SA9173G
     
    The PTO-to-engine bracket
     
    The starter
     
    The torque converter-to-flywheel bolts through the starter hole
     
    The 3 lower transmission-to-engine bolts
     
    The 1 engine-to-transmission bolt located above the PTO
     

  18.  
  19. Attach the transmission to a suitable transmission jack.
  20.  
  21. Separate the engine from the transmission , lower the assembly and disconnect the PTO hose.
  22.  
  23. Remove the PTO, if necessary.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal, please note the following torque specifications:

    Transmission-to-engine bolts: 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm)
     
    PTO bracket bolts: 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm)
     
    Torque converter-to-flexplate bolts: 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm)
     
    Bracket-to-engine bolts: 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm)
     
    Cradle bolts: 114 ft. lbs. (155 Nm)
     
    Rear pitch restrictor through bolt: 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)
     
    Front pitch restrictor bolts: 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    Front pitch restrictor through bolt: 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)
     
    Tie rod end using installer J44015 and tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
     
    Tie rod-to-steering knuckle nut: 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    Lower control arm nut: 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm) plus 150°
     
    Rack and pinion bolts: 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)
     
    Lower stabilizer nut: 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm)
     
    Drive shaft retainers: 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm)
     
    Transmission oil cooler line assembly: 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm)
     
    Front axle stub shaft nut: 151 ft. lbs. (205 Nm)
     
    Upper left hand transmission mount bolts : 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    Upper transmission-to-engine bolts: 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm)

  3. Fill the transmission to the proper level.
  4.  
  5. Warm the engine and check the transmission fluid. Check and adjust vehicle alignment, as necessary.
  6.
