Inspection

Inspect the drive belt for signs of glazing or cracking. A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. All worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced immediately.

Removal & Installation

2.2L Engine

Before servicing any vehicle, please be sure to read the precautions section, which deals with personal safety, prevention of component damage, and important points to take into consideration when servicing a motor vehicle.

CAUTION
The internal parts of the tensioner assembly are not serviceable. To avoid injury, do not disassemble the tensioner.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Safely raise the vehicle on the hoist.
  4.
  5. Remove the right wheel and the splash shield.
  6.
  7. Install the J 44811 Accessory Belt Tensioner Unloader or equivalent onto the tensioner.

To install:

  1. Install the tensioner assembly and bolt (if removed). Tighten the drive belt tensioner bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  2.
  3. Route the belt around the alternator and the A/C compressor.
  4.
  5. Install the J 44811 onto the tensioner and unload spring tension from the tensioner while positioning the belt.
  6.
  7. Release the tensioner and remove the tool.
  8.
  9. Install the right engine inner splash shield.
  10.
  11. Install the right wheel and hand tighten the wheel nuts.
  12.
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14.
  15. Tighten the wheel nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
  16.
  17. Connect the negative battery cable
  18.
  19. Tighten the battery terminal bolt to 13 ft. lbs. (17 Nm).

2.4L Engine

Before servicing any vehicle, please be sure to read the precautions section, which deals with personal safety, prevention of component damage, and important points to take into consideration when servicing a motor vehicle.

  1. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  2.
  3. Install a hydraulic belt tensioner compressor such as EN-48079 to the drive belt tensioner spring.
  4.
  5. Compress the drive belt tensioner spring fully using the hydraulic belt tensioner compressor.
  6.
  7. Install a box wrench to the drive belt tensioner) and rotate the tensioner clockwise in order to release the tension from the drive belt.
  8.
  9. With the tensioner released, remove the drive belt from under the middle idler pulley.
  10.
  11. Slowly rotate the tensioner clockwise in order to allow the tensioner to rest.
  12.
  13. Remove the drive belt from the vehicle.
  14.

To install:

  1. Install and position the drive belt around all of the pulleys except for the middle idler pulley.
  2.
  3. Install a box wrench to the drive belt tensioner and rotate the tensioner counterclockwise in order to release the tensioner.
  4.
  5. Install the drive belt under the middle idler pulley.
  6.
  7. Slowly rotate the tensioner counterclockwise in order to allow the tensioner to rest against the drive belt.
  8.
  9. Loosen the forcing bolt on the hydraulic belt tensioner compressor and remove from the drive belt tensioner spring.
  10.
  11. Ensure that the drive belt tensioner idler is fully seated against the drive belt.
  12.
  13. Install the air cleaner assembly.
