Oil Pressure Sensor

Removal & Installation



2.2L Engine

Before servicing any vehicle, please be sure to read the precautions section, which deals with personal safety, prevention of component damage, and important points to take into consideration when servicing a motor vehicle.

  1. Turn ignition OFF .
  2.  
  3. Disconnect Engine Oil Pressure (EOP) switch harness connector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the EOP switch using the J 35749 Oil Pressure Socket or equivalent.

To install:

  1. Apply RTV sealant (or equivalent) to the EOP switch threads.
  2.  
  3. Install the EOP switch.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the engine oil pressure switch to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
  6.  
  7. Connect the EOP switch harness connector. Push in the connector until a click is heard, then pull back to confirm a positive engagement.
  8.  
  9. Check the oil level and fill if low.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine and check for leaks.

2.4L Engine

Before servicing any vehicle, please be sure to read the precautions section, which deals with personal safety, prevention of component damage, and important points to take into consideration when servicing a motor vehicle.

  1. Remove the starter.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector from the oil pressure sensor.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine oil pressure sensor.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install the engine oil pressure sensor and tighten to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connector to the oil pressure sensor.
  4.  
  5. Install the starter.

3.5L Engine

Before servicing any vehicle, please be sure to read the precautions section, which deals with personal safety, prevention of component damage, and important points to take into consideration when servicing a motor vehicle.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the oil pressure sensor connector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the oil pressure sensor (1).

To install:

  1. Apply sealant.
  2.  
  3. Install the oil pressure sensor (1). Tighten the sensor to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the oil pressure sensor connector.
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  

Testing



Before servicing any vehicle, please be sure to read the precautions section, which deals with personal safety, prevention of component damage, and important points to take into consideration when servicing a motor vehicle.


NOTE
A J 44953 Oil Pressure Fitting tool or equivalent will be needed

  1. With the vehicle on a level surface, allow adequate drain down time of 2-3 minutes and measure for a low oil level. Add the recommended grade engine oil and fill the crankcase until the oil level measures full on the oil level indicator.
  2.  
  3. Run the engine, and verify low, or no oil pressure on the vehicle gage or light. Listen for a noisy valve train or a knocking noise.
  4.  
  5. Inspect for the following:

    Oil diluted by moisture or unburned fuel mixtures
     
    Improper oil viscosity for the expected temperature
     
    Incorrect or malfunctioning oil pressure sender
     
    Incorrect or malfunctioning oil pressure gauge
     
    Plugged oil filter
     
    Malfunctioning oil bypass valve
     

  6.  
  7. Remove the oil pressure sender or another engine block oil gallery plug.
  8.  
  9. Install J 44953 Oil Pressure Fitting tool or equivalent and an oil pressure gauge and measure the engine oil pressure.
  10.  
  11. Compare the readings to specifications.
  12.  
  13. If the engine oil pressure is below specifications, inspect the engine for one or more of the following:

    Oil pump worn or dirty
     
    Oil pump-to-engine front cover bolts loose
     
    Oil pump screen loose, plugged, or damaged
     
    Oil pump screen O-ring seal missing or damaged
     
    Malfunctioning oil pump pressure regulator valve
     
    Excessive bearing clearance
     
    Cracked, porous, or restricted oil galleries
     
    Oil gallery plugs missing or incorrectly installed
     
    Broken lash adjusters
     

  14.  
  15. Higher than recommended oil pressure may be caused by one or more of the following conditions:

    Worn or sticking oil pump pressure relief valve
     
    Plugged oil filter
     
    Improper viscosity oil
