Rear Main Seal

Removal & Installation



2.2L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    The negative battery cable
     
    The transaxle
     
    The clutch/pressure plate assembly, if equipped with a manual transaxle
     
    The flywheel
     

  4.  
  5. Center punch the steel ring of the oil seal.
  6.  
  7. Drill a small hole into the steel ring.
  8.  
  9. Install a self-tapping screw and using a pliers, pull out the rear main oil seal.
    WARNING
    Be careful not to damage or scratch the seal mounting surfaces.

  10.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the new rear main bearing seal with engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    A NEW rear main seal using a Rear Main Bearing Oil Seal Installer Tool J42067 until it is flush with the block
     
    The flywheel
     
    The clutch/pressure plate assembly, if equipped with a manual transaxle
     
    The transaxle
     
    The negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Start the engine and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
  6.  

2.4L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the transaxle and flywheel.
    NOTE
    Do not damage the outside diameter of the crankshaft or chamber with any tool.

  4.  
  5. Pry out the crankshaft rear oil seal using a flat-bladed tool.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Using a seal installer such as J 42067, install a NEW crankshaft real oil seal.
  2.  
  3. Install the flywheel and transaxle
  4.  

3.5L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the flywheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the seal from the rear cover.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the lip of the oil seal with a light coat of grease.
  2.  
  3. Use the driver handle tool EN 46342 and driver tool EN 46351 to install the seal squarely into the housing.
  4.  
  5. Drive the new crankshaft oil seal until the tool bottoms onto the housing. A properly installed seal will be flush with the face of the housing.
  6.  
  7. Install the engine flywheel.
