Removal & Installation

2.2L Engine

On these engines, the valves are directly actuated by the camshaft. No rocker arms are used.

3.5L Engine

Before servicing any vehicle, please be sure to read all of the following precautions, which deal with personal safety, prevention of component damage, and important points to take into consideration when servicing a motor vehicle.

NOTE
Identify parts as they are removed so they can be installed in their original locations if used again. When removing or installing the rocker arm shaft assembly, do not remove the rocker arm shaft mounting bolts. The bolts will retain the springs and rocker arms onto the shaft.

  1. Remove the valve rocker arm cover.
  2.
  3. Loosen the adjusting nuts (217) and bolts (216).

  13. Remove the intake valve rocker arms as an assembly (4) from the shaft (1).
    NOTE
Many internal engine components will develop specific wear patterns on their friction surfaces. When disassembling the engine, internal components MUST be separated, marked, or organized in a way to ensure installation to their original location and position.

  14.
  15. Separate, mark or organize the following components:
    1. Piston and the piston pin.
    2.
    3. Piston to the specific cylinder bore.
    4.
    5. Piston rings to the piston.
    6.
    7. Connecting rod to the crankshaft journal.
    8.
    9. Connecting rod to the bearing cap A paint stick or etching/engraving type tool are recommended.
    10.
    11. Stamping the connecting rod or cap near the bearing bore may affect component geometry.
    12.
    13. Crankshaft main and connecting rod bearings.
    14.
    15. Camshaft and valve lash adjusters.
    16.
    17. Rocker arm position onto the rocker arm shafts.
    18.
    19. Valve to the valve guide.
    20.

    22.
    23. Oil pump drive and driven gears.

  16.
  17. Remove the exhaust valve rocker arms (6) and springs (5) from the shaft (7).
  18.
  19. Note the installed location of the exhaust valve rocker arms (2).

  22.

To install:

  1. Install the bolts (2) and nuts (3). Do not tighten the nuts at this time.
  2.
  3. Install the intake valve rocker arm assemblies (4) onto the shaft (1).
  4.
  5. Install the bolts to the shaft (1).
  6.
  7. Install the exhaust valve rocker arms (6) and springs (5) onto the shaft (7).
  8.
  9. Note the installed position of the exhaust valve rocker arms (2).
  10.
  11. Install the bolts to the shaft (3).
  12.
  13. Install the lash adjusters (2).
    NOTE
The intake rocker arm shaft front locating pin serves as an oil passage for VTEC system operation. During assembly, use care to locate the shaft onto the pin. Replace pins that are bent or damaged.

  14.
  15. Install the rocker arm and shaft assemblies and bolts (1).
  16.
  17. Tighten the left side rocker shaft retaining bolts in sequence. Tighten the bolts 2 turns at a time in sequence, to ensure that the rocker arms do not bind on the valves.
