Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel.
    NOTE
    Do not allow the stabilizer link ball stud to rotate while removing the link nut.

  6.  
  7. Disconnect the stabilizer link from the strut assembly.
  8.  
  9. Loosen the steering knuckle to strut bolts and nuts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the wheel bearing/hub assembly.

  13. Remove and discard the lower ball joint cotter pin.
  14.  
  15. Loosen the ball stud nut, until level with the top of the ball stud.
  16.  
  17. Using the J 43828, Ball Joint Remover, separate the lower control arm from the steering knuckle.
  18.  
  19. Remove the lower control arm and nut from the steering knuckle.
  20.  
  21. Remove the outer tie rod end to knuckle nut.
  22.  
  23. Using the SA91100C, Tie Rod Separator, separate the outer tie rod from the steering knuckle.

  25. Remove the steering knuckle to strut bolts and nuts. Discard the bolts and nuts.

  27. Remove the steering knuckle from the vehicle.
  28.  

To install:

  1. Install the steering knuckle to strut assembly.
  2.  
  3. Loosely install the strut to steering knuckle bolts and nuts.
  4.  
  5. Install the control arm ball stud into the steering knuckle.
    WARNING
    There are 2 different ball studs used on this vehicle. The ball stud type must be identified in order to use the correct torque value when tightening the ball stud nut. If the wrong torque is used, damage could occur to the ball stud.

  7. Using the SA9140E, Torque Angle Gauge, install the ball stud nut.
  8.  
  9. If the bottom of the ball stud has a cup and is silver, tighten the nut to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
  10.  
  11. If the bottom of the ball stud is flat and black, tighten the nut to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Tighten the strut to steering knuckle bolts and nuts. Tighten the bolts and nuts to 133 ft. lbs. (180 Nm).
    NOTE
    Do not loosen the castle nut for cotter pin installation.

  14.  
  15. Tighten the castle nut enough to allow for cotter pin installation.
    WARNING
    The cotter pin must not contact the wheel speed sensor or drive axle.

  17. Install the cotter pin.
  18.  
  19. Install the wheel bearing/hub assembly.
  20.  
  21. Connect the outer tie rod end to the steering knuckle.
  22.  
  23. Use the J 44015, Steering Linkage Installer, to seat the ball stud taper to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Remove the J 44015, Steering Linkage Installer.
  26.  
  27. Install a new tie rod retention nut. Tighten the nut to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) plus 90°.
    WARNING
    Do not allow the stabilizer link ball stud to rotate while installing the link nut.

  28.  
  29. Connect the stabilizer link to the strut assembly.
  30.  
  31. Tighten the nut to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  32.  
  33. Install the tire and wheel.
  34.  
  35. Lower the vehicle.
  36.  
  37. Perform a wheel alignment.
  38.
