Transaxle Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transaxle fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove both battery cables
  6.  
  7. Install an engine support fixture.
  8.  
  9. Fasten the radiator to the upper radiator support.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    The front wheels
     
    The splash shields
     
    The ball joints and tie rods from the knuckle
     
    The lower control arm from the knuckle
     
    The lower stabilizer bar links
     
    The steering gear from the steering gear assembly
     
    The rear transaxle mount-to-cradle bolts
     
    The rear transaxle mount bracket-to-transaxle bolts
     
    The front lower mount through bolt from the cradle
     
    The front air deflector from the body, but leave it attached to the cradle

  13. Support the cradle with a jack.
  14.  
  15. Remove or disconnect the following:

    The cradle bolts and the cradle
     
    The shift lever cable from the shift control housing using tool J36346
     
    The shift lever cable from the bracket
     
    The pressure line from the clutch actuator by removing the C-clip and pulling it away from the actuator
     
    The back-up lamp switch connector
     
    The front transaxle mount from the transaxle
     
    The right side drive axle from the intermediate drive shaft using removal tool J45341 and slide hammer SA9173G

  17. Secure the drive axle from the intermediate drive shaft.
    NOTE
    Remove the retainer ring from the stub shaft before removing the tool and discard the ring.

  19. Remove the intermediate drive shaft using removal tool J440177 and axle seal puller SA9133T.
  20.  
  21. Remove the left side drive axle drive shaft using removal tool J45341 and slide hammer SA9173G and secure the axle aside.

  23. Remove the top transaxle mount bolts.
  24.  
  25. Use the engine support fixture to lower the transaxle enough so that the assembly can be removed.
  26.  
  27. Attach the transaxle to a suitable transaxle jack.
  28.  
  29. Remove the transaxle bolts on the engine side and the transaxle bolt on the transaxle side.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal, please note the following torque specifications:

    The transaxle-to-engine and engine-to-transaxle bolts: 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm)
     
    The top mount-to-transaxle bolts: 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    The front transaxle mount bolts: 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    The rear transaxle mount-to-transaxle bolts: 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    The cradle-to-body bolts: 114 ft. lbs. (155 Nm)
     
    The front transaxle mount through bolt: 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)
     
    The rear transaxle mount through bolt: 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)
     
    The steering gear-to-column bolt: 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm)
     
    The lower control arm nut: 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm) plus 150°
     
    The stabilizer bar link: 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm)
     
    The tie rod end using installer J44015 and tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
     
    The tie rod-to-steering knuckle nut: 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the transaxle to the proper level.
  4.  
  5. Warm the engine and check the transaxle fluid. Check and adjust vehicle alignment, as necessary.
