    The exhaust manifold heat shield

    The water pump access plate

The right hand wheel and splash shield

The drain plug from the bottom of the pump and drain the remaining coolant

The engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor connection

The thermostat housing bolts, then move the housing towards the left hand side of the vehicle while twisting the feed pipe from the rear of the pump. Leave the coolant hoses and the housing connected

The water feed pipe and discard the seals

  6.
  7. Install a Water Pump Holding Tool J43651. Tighten the bolts on the tool into threads on the pump sprocket, then install some of the access plate bolts to attach the tool to the front cover.
  8.
  9. Remove the water pump retaining bolts.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

The water pump with a new seal and torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)

The water pump sprocket and torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)

The water pump sprocket access plate and torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)

The water feed tube after lubricating the O-ring with coolant

The thermostat housing and torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)

    The exhaust manifold heat shield

    The air cleaner assembly

    The negative battery cable

  2.
  3. Fill the cooling system.
  4.
  5. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.

2.4L Engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  4.
  5. Remove the thermostat housing.
  6.
  7. Remove the engine splash shield.
  8.
  9. Remove the water pump access plate from the front cover.
    NOTE
A drain plug has been provided at the bottom of the water pump assembly for additional coolant drainage from the engine block and water pump.

  10.
  11. Drain the coolant from the water pump using the plug at the bottom of the pump.
    WARNING
The water pump holding tool supports the sprocket and chain during water pump service. The tool must be used or the balance shaft must be re-timed.

  12.
  13. Install a water pump holding tool such as J 43651 into position.
  14.
  15. Tighten the bolts on the water pump holding tool into the threads on the water pump sprocket. Install the access cover bolts that were removed earlier to secure the water pump holding tool to the front cover assembly.
  16.
  17. Remove the 3 inner water pump sprocket to water pump bolts.
    NOTE
Be sure to remove both water pump bolts from the front of the engine block.

  18.
  19. Remove the front 2 water pump bolts.
  20.
  21. Remove the rear 2 water pump bolts.

To install:

WARNING
Prior to installing the water pump, read the entire procedure. This will help avoid balance shaft chain re-timing and ensure proper sealing.

  1. Install a NEW water pump O-ring seal.
    NOTE
A guide pin can be created to aid in water pump alignment. Use an M6 6mm stud. Thread the pin into the water pump sprocket.

  2.
  3. Using the guide pin, align the pin with the water pump holding tool.
  4.
  5. Position the water pump against the engine block and hand tighten the water pump bolts.
  6.
  7. Install the inner water pump sprocket bolts. After 2 are snug, remove the guide pin and install the 3rd bolt. Tighten the water pump bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  8.
  9. Tighten the water pump sprocket bolts last to 89 in. lbs. (10 Nm).
  10.
  11. Remove the water pump holding tool.
  12.
  13. Install the water pump access plate and bolts and tighten to 89 in. lbs. (10 Nm).
  14.
  15. Install the engine splash shield.
  16.
  17. Install the thermostat housing.

3.5L Engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Drain the coolant.
  4.
  5. Remove the timing belt cover.
    NOTE
If a vehicle is diagnosed to have coolant leaking inside the timing belt cover, a visual inspection of the timing belt should be done. If there is an indication that coolant has leaked onto the timing belt such as wetness or staining, the timing belt should be replaced. Also when replacing the water pump, coolant may be spilled onto the timing belt. Replacement of the timing belt due to coolant spillage on the belt is not necessary.

  6.
  7. Remove the water pump assembly bolts.
  8.
  9. Remove the water pump and O-ring.
  10.

To install:

  1. Clean the water pump mating surfaces.
  2.
  3. Install a new water pump O-ring seal to the water pump.
  4.
  5. Install the water pump assembly and tighten the bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  6.
  7. Install the timing belt cover.
  8.
  9. Fill the cooling system.
  10.
