Crankshaft Damper (Balancer)

Removal & Installation



  1. Remove the valve cover.
  2.  
  3. Set cylinder No. 1 to TDC/compression. Turn the crankshaft damper sub-assembly, and align its timing notch with timing mark "0" of the oil pump.
  4.  
  5. Check that the timing marks on the camshaft timing sprocket and the camshaft timing gear are all facing upward. If not, turn the crankshaft 1 complete revolution (360°) and align the marks.

  7. Using 2 SSTs, 09213-14010, 09330-00021, loosen the bolt while holding the crankshaft damper sub-assembly.
    NOTE
    Check the SST installation positions when installing them, to avoid the SST fixing bolts from coming into contact with the oil pump assembly.

  9. Remove the SSTs and the bolt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the crankshaft damper sub-assembly.

  13. If necessary, remove timing chain cover front oil seal:
    1. Using a knife, cut off the lip of the oil seal.
    2.  
    3. Using a screwdriver with its tip wrapped with tape, pry out the oil seal.
      NOTE
      After removing, check the crankshaft for damage. If damaged, smooth the surface with 400-grit sandpaper.

To install:


NOTE
Keep the lip free of foreign matter.

  1. Apply MP grease to the lip of a new oil seal.
  2.  
  3. Using a seal installer (SST 09223-22010) and a hammer, tap in the oil seal until its surface is flush with the rear oil seal retainer edge.

  5. Align the pin hole in the crankshaft damper with the pin position and install the crankshaft damper sub-assembly.
  6.  
  7. Provisionally install the bolt.
  8.  
  9. Using 2 SSTs, tighten the bolt while holding the crankshaft damper sub-assembly. Tighten to 95 ft. lbs. (128 Nm).
    NOTE
    Check the SST installation positions when installing them, to avoid the SST fixing bolts from coming into contact with the oil pump assembly.
