Rear Main Seal

Removal & Installation



  1. Remove the appropriate transaxle. Refer to Drivetrain.
  2.  
  3. Remove the flywheel or flexplate. Refer to Drivetrain.
  4.  
  5. Remove rear engine oil seal:
    1. Using a knife, cut off the oil seal lip.
    2.  
    3. Using a screwdriver with its tip taped, pry out the oil seal.
      NOTE
      After removing the oil seal, check the crankshaft for damage. If it is damaged, smooth the surface with 400-grit sandpaper.

To install:

  1. Using a seal installer (SST 09223-15030 and 09950-70010) and a hammer, evenly tap the oil seal until its surface is flush with the rear oil seal retainer edge.
    NOTE
    Keep the lip free of foreign matter. Do not tap on the oil seal at an angle.

  2.  
  3. Apply MP grease to a new oil seal lip.
    NOTE
    Wipe off extra grease on the crankshaft.

  4.  
  5. To complete installation, reverse remaining removal procedure.
