Transaxle Removal & Installation

  1. Remove the four bolts and the hood sub-assembly.
  2.  
  3. Safely raise and secure the vehicle. Remove the front wheels.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drain plug and gasket, and drain the ATF. Install a new gasket and the drain plug. Tighten to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Remove the wiper motor and link.
  8.  
  9. Remove the battery assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the 4 nuts and the plastic engine cover.
  12.  
  13. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Remove the 2 bolts and the air cleaner bracket.
  14.  
  15. Position wheels facing straight ahead.
  16.  
  17. Separate steering sliding yoke sub-assembly. Refer to Steering Column in Steering.
  18.  
  19. Remove the floor carpet and 2 clips and remove the column hole cover silencer. Refer to Steering Column in Steering.
  20.  
  21. Remove the 4 bolts, then separate the clutch release cylinder.
  22.  
  23. Separate transmission control cable assembly:
    1. Remove the 2 clips and the 2 washers, and disconnect the 2 cables from the transaxle.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 2 clips and disconnect the 2 cables from the control cable bracket.
    4.

  25. Remove the 2 bolts and the control cable bracket.
  26.  
  27. Remove the bolt, then disconnect the wire harness.
  28.  
  29. Disconnect the back-up light switch connector.
  30.  
  31. Remove the starter.
  32.  
  33. Remove the RH and LH axle shaft nut.
  34.  
  35. Separate speed sensor front LH and RH (w/ ABS).
  36.  
  37. Separate front LH and RH stabilizer link assembly.
  38.  
  39. Separate LH and RH tie rod end sub-assembly.
  40.  
  41. Separate LH and RH front lower suspension arm.
  42.  
  43. Separate LH and RH front axle assembly.
  44.  
  45. Remove front halfshaft assembly.
  46.  
  47. Suspend the engine assembly.
  48.  
  49. Remove front suspension crossmember sub-assembly.
  50.  
  51. Remove the 4 bolts and the engine mounting control bracket.
  52.  
  53. Support manual transaxle assembly
  54.  
  55. Remove transverse engine mounting insulator:
    1. Remove the bolt and nut, then separate the engine mounting insulator LH.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 5 bolts and the engine mounting insulator LH.
    4.

  57. Remove the 4 bolts and the engine mounting bracket LH.
  58.  
  59. Remove the 7 bolts and the manual transaxle.

  61. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Refer to the exploded illustration for torque values.

  63. Inspect and adjust front wheel alignment.
  64.  
  65. Check for exhaust gas leakage.
  66.  
  67. Check for transaxle oil leakage.
